Southland suspends 8 players after basketball brawl

The Southland Conference has suspended a total of eight men’s basketball players — four each from Incarnate Word and Texas A&M-Commerce — following a post-game brawl that took place Monday night.

Suspended for Texas A&M-Commerce are forward Jerome Brewer Jr., guard Ant Abraham, and forward Kwo Agwa for three games each and guard Prince Davies for one game. For UIW, point guard Elijah Davis is suspended for three games, while guard Alex Anderson (a former South Alabama and Alabama State player), center Gabe Beny Til, and forward Marcus Glover will sit two games each.

The conference office cited the eight players’ “flagrant unsportsmanlike actions” in issuing the suspensions.

“The Southland Conference Board of Directors has set clear expectations for sportsmanship and behavior of our student-athletes, coaches, and spectators during and after competitions. Unfortunately, these expectations were not met on Monday night, and the Southland Conference will not tolerate any unsportsmanlike behavior,” said Commissioner Chris Grant. “I would like to extend our appreciation to A&M-Commerce Athletics Director Jim Curry and UIW Athletics Director Richard Duran for their unwavering partnership and diligent resolution of this matter.”

The brawl took place at the end of Commerce’s 76-72 victory over UIW in San Antonio, during the post-game handshake line. Here’s video:
