Southern Living picks 10 best restaurants in Orange Beach

Summer is almost over, but if you’re headed to Alabama’s beaches for a last hurrah during Labor Day weekend, here’s a reminder that Southern Living has some suggestions about where you might want to dine.

Southern Living’s list of “Best Places to Eat in Orange Beach, Alabama,” follows a similar list of picks in Gulf Shores that came out back in the spring. As you might recall, that list included some destination venues such as The Hangout and LuLu’s, but also some old-school local favorites, DeSoto’s Seafood Kitchen and Mikee’s Seafood.

The Orange Beach list follows a similar pattern, though the average seems to be a little more upscale. The brand-new CoastAL, which occupies a unique beach-access site thanks to a unique partnership between the city of Orange Beach and some of the owners of the famed Flora-Bama, is one high-end example. Southern Living describes it as “the only true beachfront restaurant on the list.”

Other entries run the spectrum from swanky to casual: Fisher’s at Orange Beach Marina, Louisiana Lagniappe, The Gulf, Playa at Sportsman Marina, Cobalt, OSO at Bear Point Harbor and Tacky Jack’s.

Doc’s Seafood stands out as an old-school family-owned venue that serves everything from “the best fried shrimp in the entire civilized world” to down-home blue-plate specials. But the biggest surprise is that the list includes a coffee shop: The Southern Grind Coffeehouse, praised for “a wide selection of coffees … breakfast, lunch, dinner and a selection of desserts including gelato.”
