South Alabama’s Jordan Scruggs honored by Sun Belt Conference

South Alabama defensive back Jordan Scruggs was named Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

Scruggs, a Kansas City, Mo., native in his first season with the Jaguars after transferring from Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College, had four tackles and an interception in a 48-14 victory at Appalachian State last Thursday. Scruggs returned his first interception as a Jaguar a school-record 95 yards to the 4-yard line, setting up a touchdown that put South Alabama up 28-0 in the second quarter.

Scruggs and the Jaguars (2-2, 1-0 Sun Belt) travel to LSU for their final non-conference game on Saturday night. That game kicks off at 6:45 p.m. on the SEC Network.

James Madison quarterback Alonza Barnett was named Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for five touchdowns and running for two in a 70-50 win over North Carolina. JMU’s Terence Spence took special teams honors after blocking a punt that resulted in a touchdown in the same game.

• Also Monday, it was announced that South Alabama’s Oct. 5 game at Arkansas State will kick off at 6 p.m. That game will stream live via ESPN+.
