South Alabama’s Darrell Luter drafted by 49ers
South Alabama cornerback Darrell Luter was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2023 NFL draft on Saturday, going with the No. 155 overall pick in the fifth round.
Luter (6-foot, 189 pounds) was a two-year starter for the Jaguars, totaling 63 tackles, five interceptions and 17 pass breakups in 23 games. The Hattiesburg, Miss., native was a first-team All-Sun Belt Conference selection in 2021 and an honorable mention pick in 2023, when he was slowed by a hand injury.
Luter is the first former South Alabama defensive player selected in the NFL draft, and the fourth player overall. The Jaguars have had at least one player picked in each of the last three drafts, following wide receiver Kawaan Baker by the New Orleans Saints in the seventh round in 2021 and wide receiver Jalen Tolbert by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round last year.
Luter’s NFL.com draft profile reads in part:
Long-limbed press-cover cornerback with the ball skills and physicality to challenge receivers outside the numbers. Luter can be a little leggy in his transitions and burst to the football, but his length helps make up for that and creates pass breakups. Louisiana-Monroe attacked him with back-shoulder throws all game, which is something to keep an eye on in the pros. He’s going to be more effective in press-and-shadow coverage than he is playing Cover 3 or off-man. His ball production dipped in 2022, but his length and playing style fit the NFL game.
