South Alabama’s beer deliveryman lands with Carolina Panthers

As the NFL’s worst team during the 2023 season, the Carolina Panthers hold the first priority on the league’s waiver process. That means the Panthers have their pick of any players waived in the NFL.

Carolina used that advantage to add six players to its 53-man active roster from among the hundreds of players waived on Tuesday as NFL teams reduced their preseason rosters to reach the regular-season limit.

Among the new Panthers are cornerback Keenan Isaac from Midfield High School and Alabama State and outside linebacker Jamie Sheriff from South Alabama.

On Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers waived Isaac and the Seattle Seahawks waived Sheriff.

Isaac joined Tampa Bay as an undrafted rookie in 2023. When the former Midfield football and basketball standout didn’t survive the cut to 53, the Buccaneers re-signed him for their practice squad after he cleared waivers.

Tampa Bay elevated Isaac to active status twice during the season, and he got on the field for 11 special-teams plays apiece in a 26-9 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Oct. 1 and a 20-6 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Nov. 12.

Isaac intercepted a pass in the Buccaneers’ 17-14 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Tampa Bay’s preseason opener on Aug. 10. In the three preseason games, Isaac played 77 defensive snaps and 22 special-teams plays and made three tackles.

Sheriff didn’t join the Seahawks until Aug. 6 after training camp had started. He had attended Seattle’s rookie minicamp in May on a tryout basis. After failing to land a contract, Sheriff spent the summer delivering beer for Southern Beverage Company in Ridgeland, Mississippi.

Despite his late start, Sheriff was on the field for 118 defensive snaps and 28 special-teams plays. Sheriff posted seven tackles on defense, another tackle on special teams, three sacks and five quarterback hits in the preseason.

The other four players awarded to Carolina as waiver claims were cornerback Shermar Bartholomew, who was cut by the New York Jets; cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields, who was cut by the Washington Commanders; linebacker Jon Rhattigan, who was cut by the Seahawks; and guard Jarret Kingston, who was cut by the 49ers.

The Panthers are preparing for their season-opening game against the New Orleans Saints at noon CDT Sept. 8 at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
