South Alabama wins Sun Belt’s all-sports trophy
For the second time in three years, sixth time in nine years and record 16th time overall, South Alabama has won the Bubas Cup as the Sun Belt Conference’s all-sports championship.
The Jaguars totaled 142 points overall, easily outdistancing second-place James Madison (132). Points are awarded in reverse order of standings for regular-season conference championships, with a single bonus point added for a conference tournament championship.
“We are proud to recognize South Alabama for its broad-based athletics excellence in 2022-23,” Sun Belt Conference Commissioner Keith Gill said. “This award is a testament to the dedication of South Alabama’s student-athletes, coaches, athletics department staff and university leadership.”
South Alabama earned its most points (13.5) in football, which tied for the overall regular-season Sun Belt championship with Troy. The Jaguars also received double-digit points in men’s golf (12), women’s soccer (11.5), softball (10), women’s outdoor track and field (10) and women’s indoor track and field (10).
South Alabama also won the Bubas Cup in 2021, and had a streak of four straight trophies from 2015-18. The trophy is named for Vic Bubas, Sun Belt Conference commissioner from the league’s formation in 1976 until his retirement in 1990.
Louisiana was third in the 2023 Bubas Cup standings with 127.5 points, ahead of Southern Miss (124.5), Texas State (124), Coastal Carolina (121.5), Arkansas State (110.5). Troy was eighth in the 16-team league with 109 points, followed by Georgia Southern (105), Marshall (103), Appalachian State (91.5), Old Dominion (79.5), Louisiana-Monroe (77) and Georgia State (65.5).
