South Alabama to scrap tradition spring football game for ‘Spring Showcase’ on April 12
Following a trend across college football, South Alabama announced Monday it has done away with a tradition spring game in favor of a “Spring Showcase” to be held in and around Hancock Whitney Stadium on April 12.
The Spring Showcase begins with the annual Easter Egg Hunt inside the Jaguar Training Center practice facility at 10 a.m., which will include 6,000 eggs. Also featured will be “special prizes and collectible eggs” from University president Jo Bonner.
At 10:30 a.m. is the annual athletics department “Yard Sale” of surplus South Alabama apparel and equipment inside the Core Industries Lounge on the concourse level at Hancock Whitney Stadium. Game-worn and new items including football helmets and jerseys, shoes, shirts, pants and shorts from various sports will be available for heavily discounted prices.
At 11:20 a.m., the Jaguars football team takes the field for a variety of drills and skills competitions. Included are individual position drills, 7-on-7, fastest player, strongest man and quarterback accuracy, among others.
Following the drills and competition, a kids football clinic will take place on the field at 12:30 p.m. for ages kindergarten and above. Beginning at 1 p.m., South Alabama players and coaches will sign autographs and give away posters.
A number of schools around the country have moved away from tradition spring games, citing a number of concerns including injury risk, showcasing players for the transfer portal and advertising schemes and formations for future opponents. For the first time in nearly 20 years, Alabama’s spring game this year will not be televised or stream on the internet.
All South Alabama Spring Showcase events are free and open to the public, as is parking at and around the stadium.
