South Alabama Spring Roundup: Saraland coach collects 400th win

Saraland defeated Beauregard 10-3 over the weekend, giving head coach Brett Boutwell his milestone 400th victory.

Boutwell is in his 17th year as a head coach overall and ninth at Saraland. He spent his first eight years as a head coach at UMS-Wright.

“It means a lot,” Boutwell said. “I wasn’t going to let the news get out. My wife made the trip this weekend and one of my assistants overheard us talking. I’ve been really blessed to work at the two schools I’ve worked at.

“I was very fortunate to be able to get my first head coaching job at age 27 at UMS, and I’ve been blessed to be at Saraland with a great administration for the last nine years. I feel lucky to be working with our staff. They do an outstanding job. It’s fun to come to work every day.”

Boutwell went 196-82 in his eight years at UMS, winning six area championships and a pair of state titles. He is currently 204-87 in his ninth year at Saraland with six area championships.

His team is 7-5 this season after playing a rigorous schedule to start the season.

“I’ve always wanted to load up the first few weeks of the schedule with tough teams, and we’ve done that this year,” Boutwell said. “We’ve played the Russellvilles, the Hartselles, the Central-Phenix Cities, the Smiths Stations, and we did it to get our guys battle tested.

“Those are all teams that are either winning state titles each year or reaching the finals. I wanted to get something positive out of it and see our guys battle through some tough teams, which I thought we did. I think this group is going to do some good things for the rest of the season.”

In the win over Beauregard, Camron Laffitte had three hits, two RBIs and a run scored. Brooks Womble had two hits, including a triple, and Santae McWilliams added two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Mike Smith had a double and three runs scored.
