South Alabama Spring Roundup: Fairhope, Central clinch area titles

No. 7 Fairhope hammered out 39 hits in three games this week and swept rival Daphne to clinch the Class 7A, Area 2 title.

The Pirates (27-9) will host Smiths Station in a best-of-three first-round playoff series next weekend.

Fairhope won Game 1, 7-4, behind Ben Moseley. The senior was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs at the plate and also got the save on the mound with three shutout innings. Tadd Mitchell, Brooks Brasfield, Hollon Brock and Harrison Sparks all had two hits. MD Johnson started and got the win. Daphne’s Parker Lomax hit a three-run homer. Jay Davidson had two hits for the Trojans.

The Pirates then swept a Thursday doubleheader, winning 12-4 and 8-1. In the opener, Jerry McDowell pitched five innings and allowed two hits and two runs while striking out six. Brasfield had three hits. Brock (homer, double), Sparks (two doubles), Jackson Hatcher (two doubles) and Jacob Conway all had two-hit games. Steele Hall had a two-run double for Daphne.

Sparks added three hits in the finale. Nolan Phillips, Brock and Moseley added two hits apiece. Brasfield got the win on the mound. Jay Davidson drove in Daphne’s only run.

The Trojans travel to defending 7A champ Central-Phenix City to open the playoffs.

Central-Phenix City takes series from Smiths Station

Reigning Class 7A state champion Central-Phenix City took two of three games from Smiths Station to win the Class 7A, Area 4 title.

The Red Devils (27-8) opened the series with an 11-3 victory. Smiths Station won the second game 10-0 to even the series before Central won 5-3 in Game 3.

Central scored two runs in the top of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie in the finale.

Landon Beaver drove in three runs for the Red Devils. Hunter Wippert got the win with two innings of shutout relief.

MGM tops Alma Bryant

Mason Waltman drove in three runs and Cody Strickhausen two as Mary G. Montgomery defeated Alma Bryant 10-3 on Thursday.

The Vikings pounded out 12 hits, scoring a run in the first, two in the third, three in the fourth, another run in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

Camden West was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Waltman was 2-for-4. Koen Wilson also had two hits. Strickhausen was the starter and got the win. He struck out nine in 5.2 innings. Fuller Musgrove and Ryder Lowery closed the game. Connor English took the loss for Bryant.

SOFTBALL

Navarre leads Brantley

Kaylee Navarre struck out 14 Luverne batters in seven innings in leading Brantley to a 5-2 victory.

She also had two hits, including a double. Campbell Hawthorne added two hits and Alex Grimes hit a two-run homer for the Bulldogs (21-9).

The Bulldogs also beat Andalusia 10-0 this week. Navarre pitched a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts. Emma Crawley had three hits.

Satsuma blanks Jackson

Belle Sheffield allowed one hit and four innings and drove in four runs as Satsuma defeated Jackson 10-0 in five innings. Sheffield struck out five and didn’t walk a batter. Anna Jo Bonds pitched the final inning.

Senior Hayden Andrews led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a single, double and triple. She scored two runs and had an RBI.

Madison Medley was 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI.

The Gators defeated T.R. Miller 7-3 on Thursday. Sheffield (19-2) was again the winning pitcher, striking out 15. She now has 503 strikeouts in her career.

Anna Joe Bonds was 3-for-4 with a homer, double and three RBIs. Hayden Andrews, Madison Medley, Presley Willis and Haley Jones each had two hits and an RBI.

Satsuma improved to 31-9 overall and will host the area tournament May 1-2.

Prattville downs Dothan

Kaytie Chandler gave up five hits and two runs in seven innings and struck out eight as Prattville defeated Dothan 5-2.

Kaylee Robles was 3-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored. Grace Easterling was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two stolen bases. Sarah Grace Jones was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

The Lions lost Thursday against Vestavia Hills, 6-5. Robles homered in the loss. Jones drove in two runs.

Prattville fell to 18-18 overall.

Baldwin County’s Madilyn Byrd throws no-hitter

Madilyn Byrd threw a no-hitter Baldwin County defeated Foley 10-0.

Byrd pitched five innings, striking out eight.

Brooke McGowin, Karsyn Barnett and Byrd all homered for the Tigers. Emma Weatherford added two hits.

GIRLS SOCCER

Brightwell’s 4 goals lead St. James

Katie Brightwell scored foul goals and had an assist as St. James defeated Alabama Christian 6-0 to finish first in Area 3.

Mary Grace Hixon added two goals and an assist. Kendal Wright and Sana Shuford each recorded an assist. Katie Irving had the shutout in goal.

On Thursday, St. James defeated Trinity 6-4, battling back from a deficit on three separate occasions. Brightwell scored five more goals. Addison Barber also scored.

Montgomery Academy, Chelsea tie

Montgomery Academy and Chelsea finished in a 1-1 tie.

Sophia Cho scored MA’s goal.

The Eagles host Oak Mountain this afternoon.

Avery Rogers leads Prattville Christian

Avery Rogers scored three goals as Prattville Christian defeated Tallassee 4-1.

Emily Branch scored the other goal. Bella Carothers and Ella Pegg each had an assist.

Prattville Christian improved to 10-3-1 and will play at Tuscaloosa Academy today.

BOYS SOCCER

Prattville Christian sweeps Autaugaville

Prattville Christian swept a pair of matches from Autaugaville this week, winning 14-1 and 10-0.

In the first game, Cade Segars scored four goals and had three assists. Cohen Palmore added three goals and three assists. Micah Newsom had a goal and an assist. Carson Wright, Liam Taylor, Grayson Gulck, Eric Sumrall, Wade Pratt and Brady Roberson each scored.

In the second game, Ryan Kiefer led the Panthers with two goals. Palmore had a goal and two assists. Segars and Brodie Whirley each had a goal and an assist. Gulck, Stephen Bicknell, Brooks Reid, Lannom Bowman, and Ethan Wong each scored a goal. Carson Wright and Liam Taylor each had an assist.

Jackson Champion powers Trinity

Jackson Champion scored three goals and had two assists as Trinity defeated St. James 6-1.

Kip Brown, Bo Stewart and Grayden Flowers each chipped in one goal. Will Owen had a pair of assists. Brown and Lawson Roth also added an assist.

Carter Younger had seven saves in goal.

The Wildcats improved to 18-6-1 and will host Round 1 of the playoffs on May 2.

Tallassee rolls past PCA

Tallassee defeated Prattville Christian 9-4 on Thursday.

Cade Segars scored all four of PCA’s goals.

TENNIS

MA captures section title

The Montgomery Academy Boys tennis team captured the Class 7A, Section 2 title on Wednesday at O’Connor Tennis Center. The Eagles totaled 56 points while runner-up Auburn High School had 47 points. Both teams qualified for the state tournament next week in Mobile.

Singles champions were Montgomery Academy’s Whit Davis (1), Charlie Hill (2), John Alford (3) and Edwin Wu (6) and Auburn’s Kaleb Kirkland (4) and Kevin Yan (5).

Doubles winners were Montgomery Academy’s John Alford and Jackson Brown (1) and Charlie Hill and Ron Sharma (2) and Auburn’s Luis Jeong and Kaleb Kirkland (3).

The MA girls finished the section runner-up. Gabby Barrera (1 singles) and Jenna Chandler (2) finished as section champs and the two also combined to win at No. 1 doubles.
