South Alabama Spring Roundup: Central-Phenix City coach grabs milestone win

Reigning 7A champion Central-Phenix City completed a huge weekend, sweeping Hoover on Friday and knocking off reigning 6A champ Hartselle and Enterprise on Saturday.

The win over Hartselle signaled a milestone for coach A.J. Kehoe, who picked up his 600th win in 24 years as a head coach.

The Red Devils beat Hoover 5-4 and 4-2. In the first game, the Red Devils (17-5) scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good. Colten Wombles and Blake Schneeberger each had two hits. Jax Yoxtheimer got the complete game win, allowing four hits and four runs and striking out four.

In the second game, Hoover took a 2-0 lead in the first inning but didn’t score again. Yoxtheimer and Landon Beaver each had two hits and an RBI. Hunter Wippert got the complete game win, striking out eight and allowing three hits and two runs.

In the win over Hartselle, Beaver and Preston Bedford both homered. Brody Stamp allowed two hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out five and walking zero for the win. Against Enterprise, Central scored nine runs in the first inning to roll to the win. Yoxtheimer homered and drove in four. Wombles had three hits and three RBIs. Cooper Kehoe was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Tripp Richards and Jaxson Lee pitched.

Spanish Fort wins two of three

Spanish Fort took two of three games from rival Robertsdale over the weekend.

In the opener, the Toros won 4-2.

Nemo Hixon led the way with two hits and two RBIs. Newton Gardner also collected two hits, including a double. John Henry Winstead earned complete game victory. He surrendered both runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.

The two teams split the doubleheader the next day with Robertsdale winning 1-0 before the Toros took the series with a 14-2 victory. Blake Smith had a double and two RBIs in the second game for Spanish Fort. John Kent had three RBIs. DJ Eurgil was the winning pitcher, scattering five hits and allow one earned run.

Bayside sweeps two

Bayside Academy completed a three-game sweep of St. Michael with 7-1, 16-0 victories on Friday.

The Admirals scored five runs in the fourth inning of the first game to take control. Sammy Dunn was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Damien Tate also had two hits. Tait Moore started and got the win. Harry Brown III and Gatlin Pitts pitched in relief.

In the second game, Bayside pounded out 17 hits and 16 runs in five innings. The Admirals scored three in the first, five in the second and six in the third. Josh Gunther homered and drove in three. Pitts was 2-for-2 with four RBIs. Cade Morris, Teague Broadhead and Weston Hannaman had two RBIs each. Jack Woods went 3-for-4.

Carson Joyner pitched four innings to get the win. Broadhead pitched the final inning. Class 4A No. 2 Bayside Academy improved to 12-6 overall.

Murphy 6, Davidson 2

Bradley Jackson provided the big hit for the Panthers in a 6-2 victory over Davidson Saturday at Mims Park. Jackson’s two-out triple in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Alex Toland and Hunter Nichols, broke open a close 3-2 game. Cullen Host followed with a single, driving in Jackson.

James Holbrook picked up the victory on the mound for the Panthers, pitching four solid innings and giving a single in the second inning. Holbrook struck out seven Warriors.

The Warriors were limited to three singles and a double at the plate. Mose Piper had the lone extra base for Davidson. He also reached twice on walks. The Warriors scored on a passed ball in the fourth inning, and Brian Davis was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth.

Adyn Scott took the loss for Warriors.

Murphy (4-11) takes on Saraland and Theodore this week in region play. Davidson (6-8) plays Satsuma and Escambia in non-region play.

Saraland 2, Gulf Shores 1

Evan Hilliard went the distance, striking out two and giving three hits and one unearned run to earn the win for the Spartans (13-6).

Ben Buxton had two hits and an RBI, while Cam Warren added a hit and an RBI. Santae McWilliams and Camron Laffitte added hits and scored runs.

Connor Gehr pitched six strong innings for Gulf Shores, striking out seven and giving up two runs.

The Spartans, who have won seven of their last eight games, travel to Murphy on Tuesday for an area game.

UMS-Wright sweeps Orange Beach

UMS-Wright swept Orange Beach on Saturday, winning 6-0 and 4-1.

In the first game, Alex Sherman (4-1) picked up the win. He went seven innings, allowing two hits. He walked one and struck out seven. Cole Blaylock had three hits with two RBI’s and Wilson Colvin and John Ramsey had two hits and an RBI apiece to pace UMS.

In the second game, Logan Norris had two hits and an RBI and CJ Stewart added an RBI double. Olin Ward added two hits. Jake Jaye (3-1) picked up the win. Jaye went six innings, allowing six hits. He struck out seven and walked one. Ward pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up his third save. UMS (13-7) will host Bayside at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

East Central, Miss. 7, Mary G. Montgomery 5

Nate Trochessett singled in the eighth inning to drive in a pair of runs as East Central edged MGM.

Trochessett, batting with the bases loaded, drove a 0-1 pitch off Ryder Lowery just past the diving Kaden Harrell at first base to right field, scoring Brandt Dickerson and Carson Ryder.

The Vikings and Hornets played a wild back-and-forth, extra-inning game that featured a combined 12 runs, 16 hits, 18 strikeouts and 17 walks and only 3 extra base hits.

Carson Ryder and Trochessett each had three hits apiece for the Hornets.

Fuller Musgrove led the Vikings with a pair of singles, driving in two runs. Musgrove leads the team in runs batted in.

TJ Dunsford picked the victory in relief for East Central, striking five and not allowing a run.

The Vikings fell to 7-9 on the season.

SOFTBALL

Satsuma goes 4-1

Satsuma went 4-1 in the Alex Wilcox Tournament this weekend and finished runner-up in the Gold Bracket.

The Gators, who host T.R. Miller on Tuesday, improved to 25-7.

Satsuma defeated Beauregard, Saraland, Auburn and Brantley before losing to Orange Beach in the championship game. Anna Bonds took the loss in the title matchup. Bralee Byrd had two hits. Hayden Andrews and Bonds each had RBIs.

Brantley goes 5-1

Brantley won five of the six games it played this week. The only loss came to Satsuma 6-4 in the semifinals of the Alex Wilcox Tournament.

The Bulldogs defeated Andalusia 1-0, Red Level 5-1, Montgomery Catholic 9-8, Abbeville 18-0 and Saraland 5-3.

Campbell Hawthorne had seven hits, seven runs scored and seven stolen bases for a .438 batting avg. A.C. Free had eight hits, including three home runs, 11 RBIs and eight runs scored for a .571 average. Emma Crawley continued eight hits and eight stolen bases.

On the mound, Kaylee Navarre had a 1.333 era with 44 strike outs. She allowed four earned runs and went 5-1 in 21 innings pitched.
