South Alabama spring roundup: Bayshore, Bayside, Fairhope rolling

Class 4A No. 1 Bayside Academy took two out of three games this week from No. 2-ranked UMS-Wright in a crucial area series.

The Admirals (14-7) won the first two games of the series 8-1 and 5-4. In the opener at UMS, Josh Gunther pitched a complete game and struck out 14. He allowed just two hits and one walk. Carson Joyner drove in three runs for Bayside and Tait Moore knocked in two more. Jake DeValk and Gatlin Pitts each had two hits. Sutton Snypes took the loss.

In the second game in Daphne, Bayside scored four runs in the first and held off a UMS rally in the late innings. Teague Broadhead was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs for the Admirals. Devalk was 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Logan Norris was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for UMS. Joyner pitched the first four innings to get the win. Broadhead and Pitts combined to pitch the final three. Alex Sherman took the loss for the Bulldogs.

UMS won the series finale 10-2, scoring two runs in the first, a single run in the fifth, two in the sixth and five in the seventh. Olin Ward and Will Taylor each drove in three runs for the Bulldogs. Jake Jaye pitched five innings to get the win. Andy Purvis pitched the final two innings. Bayside used five pitchers on the day.

No. 1 Tuscaloosa Academy edges Auburn

Class 7A No. 1 Tuscaloosa Academy moved to 25-3 on Thursday with a 2-1 win over No. 9 Auburn in a top 10 matchup.

Mitt Landers pitched the first four innings, allowing three hits and one run. He struck out four. Spencer Nicholas pitched the final three innings, allowing one hit and striking out three.

Grant Brown went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles to lead the offense.

Saraland sweeps past Murphy

Class 6A No. 3 Saraland swept three games from Murphy this week.

The Spartans won 16-1 in the opener followed by a 4-0, 11-0 sweep on Day 2.

In the first game, Brooks Womble led the way with two hits, including a three-run homer. Cameron Laffitte also had three hits and Even Hilliard and Bryson Goff added two hits. Brodie Lloyd had a two-run homer. Cam Warren pitched five innings, striking out 11, to earn the win.

In the second game, Goff pitched a one-hit complete game with nine strikeouts. Hilliard had two RBIs. Clint Smith had a hit and an RBI and Laffitte and Ben Buxton each had two hits.

In the finale, Hilliard pitched two scoreless innings, striking out four to earn the win. Kade Cook and Grayson Cole combined to strike out six in relief. Warren had four RBIs, including a three-run triple. Goff had two hits and three RBIs. Fuller Chisholm had two hits and an RBI.

Saraland improved to 16-6 overall and 3-0 in area play.

Fairhope win streak reaches 10

Fairhope went 4-0 this week to run its current win streak to 10 games. The Pirates are now 17-8 overall.

Fairhope capped the week by beating Normal West (Ill.) 12-3 on Thursday. Jackson Hatcher got the win, pitching 3.2 innings and giving up two earned runs. Brooks Brasfield led the offense with two hits and four RBIs. Nolan Phillips, Hatcher and Caden Creel each had multiple hits. Darren Leggett pitched the final 2.1 innings.

Kyle Hunter’s team started the week with a 8-0 shutout of Rehobeth. Ben Moseley went 3-for-3 to lead a Fairhope offense that totaled 11 hits. Creel and Hollon Brock had a pair of hits and Hatcher had two RBIs. Sophomore Jerry McDowell got the win, pitching five innings and striking out seven.

The Pirates played two games Wednesday, beating Hueytown 1-0 and Spanish Fort 7-2. In the Hueytown win, Harrison Cook got the win with two innings in relief of MD Johnson. Fairhope scored the only run of the game in the seventh when Jacob Conway led off with a double and was driven in by Brasfield.

Against the Toros, Brasfield pitched three innings to get the win on the mound. Connor Gunnison went 2.1 innings to qualify for the save. Sparks and Moseley had two hits each and Moseley had two RBIs. Phillips sparked a three-run sixth with an RBI single.

Fairhope plays at Elberta on Monday.

Bayshore downs 6A Gardendale

Bayshore Christian scored four runs in the first inning and made them stand up in a 4-1 win over Class 6A Gardendale.

Mikael Bryant got things started with an RBI double and Riley Malone drove in two runs with a single. Bryant finished with two hits and an RBI.

Streed Crooms earned the complete-game victory. He allowed only one run on five hits, striking out six and walking one.

Earlier in the week, Bayshore defeated Athens High and Gordonsville, Tenn. The Eagles (14-4) have won nine of their last 10 games. They play Thursday at St. Luke’s.

Rick McBride powers Montgomery Academy

Rick McBride went 3-for-3 with a triple and two stolen bases as Montgomery Academy defeated Catholic 6-4.

Will Hardin was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

The Eagles lost at St. James 3-2 on Thursday. Hardin had an RBI double and Oscar Fiore had an RBI for MA. Fiore took the loss on the mound, giving up three runs in 4.1 innings. Hardin pitched the final 1.2 innings.

SOFTBALL

Satsuma edges T.R. Miller

Belle Sheffield improved to 14-2 overall with seven innings of five-hit ball for the Gators as they knocked off T.R. Miller 4-3. She struck out 13 and walked one. Kinsley Byrd took the loss.

Hayden Andrews, Madison Medley and Presley Willis all homered for the Gators. Bralee Byrd added two hits. Meg Fountain had two Hits and two RBIs for the Tigers.

Faith Academy 3, MGM 2

Morgen Brewton struck out four and scattered five hits as Faith Academy improved to 12-6.

Victoria Nobles and Larkyn Anthony had two hits each. Mylee Stagner, Mackenzie Smith and Brewton each had a hit.

Faith plays Vigor on Monday.

BOYS TENNIS

MA shuts out Opelika

The Montgomery Academy boys tennis team improved to 11-4 with a 9-0 win over section opponent Opelika High School.

Whit Davis, Charlie Hill, John Alford, Jackson Brown, Ford Morano and Edwin Wu won singles matches and the doubles teams of Whit Davis and Charlie Hill, John Alford and Jackson Brown and Ron Sharma and Ford Morano swept doubles matches.

Montgomery Academy lost a match later in the week to Florence, 5-4. Davis, Hill and Brown won singles matches for the Eagles and Davis and Hill won at No. 1 doubles.

BOYS GOLF

Eagles win Spring Invitational

Montgomery Academy won the MCC Spring Invitational this week. The event also included Trinity, Saint James, Alabama Christian and Pike Road. MA had a team score of 313. Pike Road was second with a 315 and Trinity third with 318.

Breland Burnham was low man for the MA team and third low medalist for the tournament with a 73.

GIRLS SOCCER

Brightwell scores 8 goals for St. James

Kate Brightwell scored eight goals and had an assist on St. James’ other goal in a 9-2 win over Opelika on Thursday.

Sana Shuford scored the other goal.

Addison Barber assisted on three goals. Ragan King, Shuford and Natalie Barton each contributed an assist.

St. James hosts ACA on Tuesday.

Baker shuts out MGM

Belle Van Dyne scored three goals to lead the Hornets past MGM 6-0 in Class 7A, Region 1 on Thursday in Semmes. Britton Barefoot recorded the shutout in goal for Baker.

The Hornets improved to 11-4 and 5-1 in region play. The Vikings dropped 0-11.

Baker hosts Alma Bryant and St. Paul’s next, while MGM travels to Alma Bryant and Robertsdale.

MA shuts out Pike Road

Mary Cole scored three goals in Montgomery Academy’s 6-0 win over Pike Road.

Hayes Jenkins, Sophia Cho and Kerstin Daniel also scored.

Cho had two assists.

Prattville Christian rolls over BTW

Avery Rogers had two goals and two assists as Prattville Christian defeated BTW 8-0. Ella Pegg added two goals and an assist. Emily Branch had a goal and two assists. Landry Hughes and Morgan Lisle each scored a goal. Kendall Jordan recorded the shutout.

PCA (4-1-1) plays Holy Spirit today.

BOYS SOCCER

Trinity edges rival Catholic

Jackson Champion scored both goals for the Wildcats with an assist from Will Owen.

Carter Younger had six saves in goal.

Trinity improved to 12-4-1 with the win. The Wildcats travel to B.T. Washington on Monday.
