South Alabama Spring Roundup: Auburn rallies to top Mobile Christian

Auburn rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Class 5A No. 1 Mobile Christian 7-6 on Thursday night.

Reed Woods’ sacrifice fly to right field scoring Henry Allen proved to be the game winner for the Tigers.

Henry Allen had a pair of hits for the Tigers, driving in his 15th run of the year.

ASWA softball rankings

Brady Keller took the loss for Mobile Christian. Keller pitched one inning, allowing three runs on two hits and walking one.

Connor Cosby led the Tigers offense, collecting three hits including a pair of doubles in the leadoff spot. Auburn totaled 12 hits. Cosby leads the team with 14 hits on the season.

The Tigers added long balls by Jace Norton and Michael Daniel, both coming in the third inning.

Brenden Bryant was the winning pitcher for Auburn, pitching in relief for two innings and giving up one hit.

Mobile Christian was led at the plate by Noah Blackburn’s two hits, including a solo home run in the second inning that tied the game 1-1. Damian Gatson, Seth Smith and Ben Brewer all collected multiple hits for Mobile Christian.

The Leopards’ winning streak was snapped at four games. Mobile Christian dropped to 11-4 and will play at Saraland today weather permitting, while Class 7A No. 8 Auburn improved to 7-4 and will take on Baker in West Mobile.

Saraland 12, Davidson 2

The Class 6A No. 3 Spartans pounded out 13 hits and scored 12 runs in defeating Davidson Thursday night at Mims Park.

Clint Smith, Cam Warren, Bryson Goff and Cam Laffitte collected multiple hits for the Saraland offense. Smith drove in four runs for Saraland. Bryson Goff reached base three times, driving in a pair of runs.

Brooks Womble reached base three times, swiping six bases for the Spartans. He now has 18 stolen bases for the season.

Hillard picked the victory on the mound for Saraland, pitching five strong innings, allowing two runs and striking out seven. The Spartans leader in innings pitched recorded his second victory of the season. Ben Buxton and Brodie Llyod combined to strike out 5 in relief.

Beck Piper recorded two hits for Davidson in defeat. The Warriors managed four hits, all singles.

Saraland improved to 10-5.

The Spartans have won four straight games, scoring double-digit runs in each victory.

Earlier in the week, Saraland swept Blount 15-0, 13-2. Laffitte earned the win in the opener, striking out five. He also drove in four runs with a double and two-run homer. Evan Hilliard had three RBIs. Brooks Womble, Jamison Curtis and Clint Smith had two hits . Santae McWilliams collected three hits.

In the second game, Grayson Cole earned the win on the mound, striking out five. D’Tric Butler also struck out five in final two innings. McWilliams had a three-run double, Womble had three hits, including a triple.

UMS-Wright 10, Sapulpa, Okla. 2

Alex Sherman struck out 13 as UMS won big.

Sherman allowed three hits with two walks to lead UMS. Olin Ward, Wilson Colvin and Will Taylor had two hits each.

Taylor, John Ramsay and Matthew Hedge added two RBIs each.

UMS (10-7) hosts Orange Beach at 5 p.m. Thursday.

The Bulldogs split two games earlier in the week, defeating Pryor, Okla., 4-1 and losing to Decatur 11-0.

In the win, Sutton Snypes (3-1) went seven innings, allowed two hits and struck out eight. He also had two RBIs at the plate. Hedge added an RBI double.

In the loss, Decatur scored six runs in the top of the fifth to break the game open. Hedge took the loss. Ward, Snypes and Tanner Roach had hits for UMS.

Bayside Academy 19, Fort Gibson 9

Josh Gunther, Carson Joyner and Cade Morris all homered for Class 4A No. 1 Bayside Academy.

The Admirals broke the game open with six runs in the third and seven in the fourth.

Joyner drove in four runs, Morris three and Gunther two. Morris collected four hits. Gunter and Gatlin Pitts had three each.

Weston Hannaman got the win in relief of Tait Moore for Bayside. Harry Brown III pitched the final two innings.

Earlier in the week, Bayside defeated Merritt Island 3-1. Gunter pitched a complete game, striking out 11 and allowing just three hits and one unearned run. He also had two hits and two RBIs.

Montgomery Academy 14, Tallassee 1

Montgomery Academy scored five runs in the first and five more in the second to break the game open.

The Eagles scattered 16 total hits with 13 RBIs. Ware McCollum threw a complete game, one-hitter with nine strikeouts.

Offensively, Walton Norrell went 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Camp Shanahan had two hits and three RBIs and John Allen Jones, Bray Renfroe and Oscar Fiore each had two RBIs.

Fairhope wins three

Fairhope won three games this week.

The Pirates defeated Huntsville 13-0. Miles Drew Johnson pitched all four innings, allowing one hit and striking out seven. Jacob Conway had three RBIs. Brooks Brasfield, Nolan Phillips and Ben Moseley drove in two runs each.

In a 13-1 win over University School, Fairhope took advantage of six University School errors. Harrison Cook started the game and got the win. The Pirates also scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to beat Roff 4-3. Jerry McDowell was the winner in relief. Brasfield and Conway had two hits each.

SOFTBALL

Prattville 10, Dothan 7

Kaylee Robles had three hits, including a triple, and Kyle Jarman struck out six batters in five innings for Prattville.

Kaytie Chandler pitched the last two innings for the Lions to get the save.

Robles scored twice and drove in a run. Sarah Grace Jones had two hits and two RBIs, Grace Easterling drove in three runs and Chandler added a home run and two RBIs.

Prattville (12-12) hosts Class 7A No. 1 Thompson on Thursday.

Baldwin County 2, Saraland 0

Madilyn Byrd shut out Saraland, striking out 12 for the Tigers. Saraland’s Myleigh Dobbins was impressive as well with eight strikeouts.

Emily Weatherford went 2-for-3 to lead the Baldwin County offense.

Satsuma 12, Jackson 0

Belle Sheffield struck out 13 batters in a six-inning shutout for the Gators. Sheffield allowed two hits and didn’t walk a batter in improving to 8-2. She struck out the game’s first nine batters.

Hayden Andrews went 2-for-4 for the Gators with a home run, a triple and five RBIs. Anna Joe Bonds and Jaiden Corlett each had three hits. Madison Medley had two hits and two RBIs. Presley Wills also had two RBIs.

Satsuma (17-5) will travel to Biloxi, Miss., for tournament play this weekend.

GIRLS SOCCER

St. James 6, Central-Phenix City 0

Kate Brightwell scored five goals for the Trojans. Mary Grace Hixon scored the other goal on an assist from Brightwell. Katie Irving, Riley Purcell, Hixon, Natalie Barton and Addison Barber each contributed assists. The Trojan defense recorded its third shutout of the season led by Hope and Hannah McCain. St. James plays Opelika on March 30.

Earlier in the week, St. James defeated Prattville Christian 5-0. Brightwell scored two goals. Ragan King, Mary Grace Hixon and Kendal Wright providing the other goals. Natalie Barton, Hixon, KK Corley, Hope McCain and Sana Shuford each provided an assist.

BOYS SOCCER

Trinity 10, Andalusia 0

Jackson Champion scored three goals for the Wildcats. Kip Brown and Mac Davis added two each. Lawson Roth, Norris Pemberton and Zachary Wilson all chipped in one each. Will Owen led the way in assists with three.

Earlier in the week, Trinity beat BTW 10-0. Champion had four goals and Roth added two.

Carter Younger and Julian Lee split the shutout.

TRACK

Montgomery Academy competed in the River Region Invitational this week.

Isabella Johnson led the way for the girls, finishing first in the discus, second in the javelin and third in the shotput. For the boys, Grant Casey finished first in the 1,600 meter and second in the 800 meter.
