South Alabama signs former Big Ten, ACC quarterback through transfer portal

South Alabama has added quarterback Zach Pyron through the transfer portal, AL.com has confirmed via a source.

Pyron, a Pinson Valley High School graduate who also played at Fyffe, spent three years at Georgia Tech before transferring to Minnesota in January. A former four-star recruit, he re-entered the transfer portal earlier this week, and is now headed to Mobile.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Pyron played in a total of 19 games in three seasons at Georgia Tech, completing 88 of 155 passes for 995 yards and five touchdowns with seven interceptions. He added 271 yards and six touchdowns rushing.

Pyron played his first two years of high school football at Fyffe, winning back-to-back Class 2A state championships before transferring to Pinson Valley. He quarterbacked the Indians to a 6A state title as a junior in 2020 (with future Alabama star Kool-Aid McKinstry as a teammate), then a state quarterfinals appearance as a senior.

The move comes a day after former Jaguars starting quarterback Gio Lopez announced he was committing to North Carolina, reportedly on a multi-year NIL deal worth $4 million. Pyron, who redshirted after three games in 2022, has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Lopez’s departure left South Alabama with only two scholarship quarterbacks, junior Bishop Davenport (who started three games — including the Salute to Veterans Bowl victory over Western Michigan — while Lopez was injured last season) and redshirt freshman Jared Hollins. Former McGill-Toolen star Bubba Thompson also joined the team as a 26-year-old walk-on in the spring after playing professional baseball for eight years.

Pyron is the first South Alabama player to sign out of the portal in the current cycle, which runs until April 26. News of his transfer was first reported by On3 and 247 Sports.
