South Alabama shut out of NCAA softball tournament

South Alabama’s softball season is over after the Jaguars were left out of the NCAA Regional tournament field announced Sunday.

The Jaguars will sit home despite a 39-14 overall record, a 20-4 mark in the Sun Belt Conference and an RPI ranking of 42. South Alabama lost to Marshall 3-2 in the semifinals of the Sun Belt tournament on Saturday, ending its 14-game winning streak.

Two Sun Belt Conference teams were selected for the 64-team regional field: regular-season and tournament champion Louisiana and No. 5 Sun Belt tournament seed Texas State. The Ragin’ Cajuns are the No. 2 seed at LSU, while the Bobcats are the No. 3 seed at Texas.

South Alabama won two of three from Texas State in San Marcos, Texas, during the regular season and finished 6 ½ games ahead of the Bobcats in the conference standings (TSU went 13-9-1 in the Sun Belt and also lost in the tournament semifinals). Texas State had an RPI of 39, three spots ahead of the Jaguars.

One team with a lower RPI than South Alabama did receive an at-large bid to a regional — No. 45 Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish are 29-17-1 overall, had a losing record in ACC play (11-12-1) and lost 8-1 in its lone conference tournament game.

Despite the regional snub, South Alabama’s 2023 season will go down as one of the best in program history. The Jaguars set a school record for conference wins, had their longest winning streak in 10 years and recorded their most overall wins and fewest overall losses since 2015.

Olivia Lackie, was named the Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year and was one of three first-team all-conference picks for the Jaguars. Becky Clark won Sun Belt Coach of the Year for the second straight year and third time in her career.

South Alabama has reached the NCAA tournament five times in the program’s 17-year history, most recently in 2021. The Jaguars hosted a regional in 2013, but lost to Florida State in the championship game.
