South Alabama safety Keith Gallmon to enter NCAA transfer portal
If Keith Gallmon is to play a seventh season of college football, it won’t be at South Alabama.
Gallmon, a former Mobile Christian School standout, announced Wednesday he is entering the NCAA transfer portal. He was a three-year starter for the Jaguars before injuries marred his 2022 and 2023 seasons.
Gallmon is the fourth South Alabama player — and third safety — to enter the transfer portal since the end of spring practice. Backup safeties Jamarrien Burt and Tremel States-Jones left the team on Monday along with reserve tight end/wide receiver Caeleb Schlachter.
Gallmon originally signed with South Alabama under coach Steve Campbell in 2018, and played extensively as a true freshman. He was a starting safety for the Jaguars from 2019-21, earning second-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors in the latter year.
The 5-foot-9, 202-pound Gallmon missed all of 2022 when he tore a pectoral muscle during a preseason scrimmage. He took a redshirt year and returned to win a starting job going into the 2023 season.
However, Gallmon tore his other pectoral muscle during Week 2 of last season and missed the remainder of the year. He was granted a seventh season of eligibility by the NCAA but missed all of spring practice while rehabbing the injury.
Gallmon finishes his South Alabama career with 205 tackles, three interceptions, 17 pass breakups, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles in 48 games played. He was a preseason first-team All-Sun Belt pick prior to his injury in 2022.
Division I football players must notify their school’s athletic department they intend to enter the transfer portal before April 30, though they can sign with their destination school at any time.
