South Alabama Roundup: UMS coach reaches 700 wins

UMS-Wright coach Kevin Raley recorded his 700th career victory as his Bulldogs swept St. Michael’s 5-0 and 10-0 this week.

In the opener, Wilson Colvin had two hits and three RBIs. Will Taylor and Matthew Hedge added two hits each. Alex Sherman (5-2) picked up the win. He went six innings, allowing four hits and striking out 12.

In the second game, Jake Jaye (5-1) went five innings and allowed two hits with 10 strikeouts. Hedge had three hits and three RBIs. Wilson Colvin and Logan Norris had two hits and two RBIs. UMS improved to 17-9.

Fairhope keeps rolling

Class 7A No. 1 Fairhope won three games this week to improve to 20-8 overall.

The Pirates swept Mobile Christian late in the week, winning 8-6 and 3-1.

In the first game, Miles-Drew Johnson started and went 3.2 innings, striking out six. Connor Gunnison got the win, going two innings and allowing no runs on one hit. Ben Moseley earned the save.

Fairhope pounded out 15 hits in overcoming a 6-1 deficit. Jackson Hatcher went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a pair of doubles. Brooks Brasfield, Nolan Phillips, Hollon Brock and Moseley all had multiple hits.

Seth Smith led the Mobile Christian offense, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

In the second game, Jerry McDowell and Harrison Cook threw a combined one-hitter. McDowell pitched five innings, striking out 13 and allowing one hit. Cook recorded the save.

Jacob Conway led the offense with a two-run homer.

Earlier in the week, Fairhope beat Elberta 9-5. McDowell pitched one inning to get the win. Harrison Sparks was 2-for-3. Brasfield and Phillips each had a double and two RBIs.

The Pirates play at Alma Bryant on Monday.

Goff, Saraland shut down Faith

Bryson Goff took a no-hitter into the seventh inning as Saraland defeated Faith Academy 3-0 in the first of their three-game series.

Faith’s Brodie Lambert broke up the no-hitter in the seventh. Goff finished the night with 13 strikeouts and only two walks. Both of the walks were later picked off base.

Faith Academy only had one runner reach second base.

Brooks Womble had two hits for the Spartans. Cam Laffitte had two hits and two runs scored. Evan Hilliard had a hit and RBI. Cam Warren added a hit and run scored.

The Spartans host Faith Academy for Game 2 of the series at 5 p.m. today at the Saraland Sports Complex. The Spartans are now 17-7 and 5-0 in area.

Red Devils roll past Opelika

Colten Wombles drove in three runs and Carson Gilley, Hunter Wippert and Blake Schneeberger drove in two each as Central-Phenix City defeated Opelika 15-1.

The Red Devils broke the game open with nine runs in the fifth inning.

Tripp Richards pitched four innings, allowing one run on one hit and striking out six for the win. Cam Norton pitched the final five innings. The Bulldogs used five pitchers.

The win finished a three-game sweep for Central, which also won 12-1 and 13-3.

No. 1 Bayside Academy sweeps Orange Beach

Class 4A No. 1 Bayside Academy swept a three-game series from Orange Beach.

The Admirals won the first game 13-0 with Josh Gunther throwing a no-hitter. He struck out nine in five innings and walked two. He also had two hits. Cade Morris led the offense with three hits and three RBIs. Gaitlin Pitts drove in two runs.

In the second game, Bayside scored five runs in the third and five more in the sixth inning. Teague Broadhead was 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Noah Cain, Jake DeValk and Pitts each had two hits. Carson Joyner was the winning pitcher.

In the finale, the Admirals scored eight runs in the third inning on the way to a 9-0 victory. Four Bayside pitchers combined to allow three hits. Gunther homered and drove in three runs. He and DeValk each had two hits. Tucker West took the loss for the Makos.

Hornets blow past Hurricanes

Baker used a five-run second inning to defeat Alma Bryant 7-1.

The Hornets capitalized on six Alma Bryant errors.

Bryant Durbin and Landon Vayda both doubled.

Micah Cornelius pitched five innings to get the win.

Bayshore Christian downs St. Luke’s

Cole Dean allowed two runs in five innings and struck out seven as Bayshore Christian defeated St. Luke’s 10-2 in the first of their three-game series.

Riley Malone pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Bayshore totaled 10 hits. Jack Malone, Dean and Mikael Bryant had multiple hits. Jack Malone also had two RBIs and John Malone and Bryant scored two runs.

Kyle Eddington took the loss for St Luke’s, giving up six hits, six walks and seven runs. Will Spivey led the Wildcats with three hits, including a double.

Steele Hall lifts Daphne

Steele Hall hit a solo home run as Daphne defeated Foley 4-1.

Jay Davidson had an RBI double in the fifth. Parker Lomax was 2-for-3 with a double.

On the mound, Lomax threw a complete game, allowing one run on two hits while striking out 13.

The Trojans (12-12, 1-0) and Lions complete the series today.

SOFTBALL

Fairhope knocks off Satsuma

Ryley Harrison hit a grand slam and Emma Stewart was 4-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs as Fairhope defeated Satsuma 12-6.

Edy Garvin was 2-for-5 with three runs scored.

A.J. Bonds was 3-for-4 for Satsuma with a home run and two RBIs. Madison Medley homered and had three RBIs.

Satsuma (27-9) plays Leroy today at home at 3:45 p.m. as part of the Saraland Tournament.

Earlier in the week, the Gators defeated MGM 9-5. Belle Sheffield was the winning pitcher and had two RBIs. A.J. Bonds and Madison Medley each had a home run. Laina Holliman and Haylee Hall homered for the Vikings in a five-run fourth.

Brooke Tillman leads Hurricanes

Brooke Tillman had a pair of doubles and three RBIs as Alma Bryant defeated Mary G. Montgomery 5-3.

Madelyn Ladnier pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits.

Ana Acree had a double and a triple to lead Bryant. Gail Wisher tripled.

Alma Bryant improved to 16-11-1 and 3-2 in the area.

Bryant hosts Foley on Monday.

Brantley silences Ashford

Kaylee Navarre struck out 16 and gave up one hit as Brantley defeated Ashford 5-0.

Alex Grimes had double and Coco stamps has two hits.

Baldwin County downs Elberta

Aspen Gerald, Ryann Wallace, Emma Weatherford, Brooke McGowin and Madilyn Byrd each had multiple hits as Baldwin County defeated Elberta 9-1.

Payton Boyington earned the win in the circle. Addison Roberts pitched the final three innings in relief.

BOYS SOCCER

Baker tops St. Paul’s

Grantham Morgan scored both goals, including the game-winner in extra time, as Baker defeated St. Paul’s 2-1 on Thursday night in West Mobile.

The Saints led 1-0 at halftime. Morgan scored from 25 yards out to tie the game at 1-1. Morgan added the game winner for the Hornets on a free kick from 45 yards out in overtime.

“I’m proud of the team’s effort tonight,” Morgan said. “This was a big victory for playoff implications.”

Baker improved to 13-3-2 and will play Davidson next Wednesday.

Champion’s hat trick leads Trinity

Jackson Champion scored three goals as Trinity defeated Lamp 8-1.

Tillman Clements, Kip Brown, Andy Ensminger, Julian Lee and Garrison Gulledge also scored.

Brew Tech downs Prattville Christian

Cohen Palmore scored PCA’s only goal in a 2-1 loss. Cade Segars had the assist.

Prattville Christian (3-6) will host Holy Spirit on Monday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Katie Brightwell leads St. James

Katie Brightwell scored five goals as St. James defeated Alabama Christian 8-0.

Mary Grace Hixon scored two goals, and Kendal Wright scored a goal.

Hannah McCain, Addison Barber, Hilda Elofsson, Riley Purcell and Hope McCain all recorded an assist during the game.

St. James plays Auburn on Wednesday.

Prattville Christian shuts out Brew Tech

Avery Rogers had a goal and an assist for Prattville Christian in a 3-0 win over Brew Tech.

Ava Grier and Riley Johnson each added one goal.

Kendall Jordan recorded the shutout in goal. PCA (7-1-1) will host Holy Spirit on Monday.

BOYS TENNIS

St. Paul’s defeats Fairhope 5-4

St. Paul’s rallied from a 2-4 deficit to beat Fairhope 5-4 on Tuesday.

The Saints finished the regular season 9-6 and now head into postseason play.

Thomas Brutkiewicz compiled a 12-3 singles record at No. 2 singles and four others members of the varsity team compiled a winning record in singles and doubles play.
