South Alabama rolls past Southern Miss, 55-3

South Alabama appears to have flipped a switch of some sort.

The Jaguars posted their second straight thoroughly dominant performance on Tuesday night, routing Southern Miss 55-3 at Hancock Whitney Stadium. Coupled with a 55-7 win at Louisiana-Monroe on Oct. 7, South Alabama has outscored its last two opponents 110-10.

More importantly, South Alabama got over the .500 mark at 4-3 overall, 2-1 in Sun Belt Conference play. Southern Miss (1-6, 0-4) slid to its sixth straight loss.

La’Damian Webb ran for 102 yards and four touchdowns to lead the way for South Alabama, which scored on nine of its first 10 possessions and nine of 12 overall. The Jaguars’ defense held the Golden Eagles to just 149 offensive yards; Southern Miss did not cross the 50-yard line until the third quarter.

South Alabama piled up 647 total yards, the most in program history vs. an FBS opponent. Since the fourth quarter of a 31-23 loss to James Madison on Sept. 30, the Jaguars have outscored their opponents 127-16 and scored on 21 of 26 offensive possessions.

South Alabama quarterback Carter Bradley completed 21 of 27 passes for 319 yards despite playing less than three quarters. Caullin Lacy extended his program record with his sixth straight 100-yard game, catching nine passes for 103 yards.

Just as it did vs. ULM last time out, South Alabama started quickly on Tuesday and never really let up. The Jaguars scored touchdowns on their first four possessions and added a field goal on their fifth to lead 31-0 at halftime.

South Alabama outgained Southern Miss 402 yards to 26 in the first half, with Southern Miss having nearly as many penalty yards (25) as total yards. The Jaguars defense held the Golden Eagles to two first downs in the first half, their second not coming until USA led 28-0.

South Alabama’s touchdown drives encompassed 75, 85, 80 and 51 yards, the first three ending in Webb touchdown runs of 5, 2 and 5 yards. Kentrel Bullock ran 18 yards for a touchdown on the fourth, making it 28-0 at the 7:03 mark of the second quarter.

Diego Guajardo added a 28-yard field goal with 45 seconds left in the half, and the Jaguars got the ball back one more time before the break. However, Guajardo missed from 43 yards that time, keeping it 31-0 at halftime.

Guajardo made a 39-yarder on South Alabama’s first possession of the second half to make it 34-0. Southern Miss answered with Andrew Stein’s 32-yarder for a 34-3 score at the 5:40 mark of the third.

The Jaguars answered with a 3-play scoring drive, ending in Webb’s 16-yard run and a 41-3 lead with 4:41 left in the third. The fourth touchdown tied Webb’s program record, set last season at Georgia Southern.

After Southern Miss turned it over on downs, South Alabama pulled most of its offensive starters. Walk-on running back Dorian Smith burst 29 yards for a Jaguars touchdown with 1:20 left in the third, making it 48-3.

Freshman quarterback Gio Lopez added to the scoring spree for South Alabama, running 20 yards for his first career touchdown with 13:47 left in the game. Lopez later had a 27-yard touchdown called back by a holding penalty.

South Alabama is now 4-0 all-time vs. Southern Miss, with victories in each of the last four seasons. The last two of those wins have come with the Golden Eagles a member of the Sun Belt Conference.

South Alabama next plays Oct. 28 at home vs. Louisiana. Kickoff for that game is set for 4 p.m.
