South Alabama releases depth chart ahead of Tulane game
South Alabama on Monday released its depth chart for its 2023 season-opener vs. Tulane.
The Jaguars meet the No. 24 Green Wave at 7 p.m. Saturday at Yulman Stadium in New Orleans. Tulane is about a 6-point favorite to win the game, according to most online wagering services.
RELATED: South Alabama reserve defensive tackle out for season due to injury
There were no major surprises on the Week 1 depth chart. Most players who had been running with the first- and second-team offenses and defenses were listed as such Monday.
A few notes:
• Freshman Gio Lopez is listed as the third-team quarterback, behind starter Carter Bradley and veteran backup Desmond Trotter. Lopez beat out redshirt freshman Bishop Davenport, a Utah State transfer, for the third-team spot.
• Braylon McReynolds and Kentrel Bullock are sharing second-team running back duties behind returning All-Sun Belt pick La’Damian Webb. Bullock, an Ole Miss transfer, was one of the most pleasant surprises of camp.
• Jaden Voisin and Jalen Jordan are listed as co-starters at Rover safety. Jordan started at free safety last season in place of Keith Gallmon, who returned to reclaim his starting job after an injury kept him out all of last season.
• Jack Martin and Aleksi Pulkkinen are listed as co-starters at punter. Martin is likely to handle first-team duties on Saturday, however.
• Departed punter Jack Brooks was also the Jaguars’ primary holder on field goals and extra points. Trotter and Martin are listed as co-starters at holder for Week 1.
• Only nine newcomers were listed on the two-deep, with only Pulkinnen as a first-teamer (or co-first-teamer, in this case). Lopez is the third-team quarterback, while the others are all second-teamers: Mississippi State transfer Reed Buys at left guard, South Carolina transfer Jordan Davis at right tackle, Bullock at running back, freshman Anthony Eager at H-receiver, Memphis transfer Javon Ivory at Z-receiver, junior-college transfer Reggie Neely at field cornerback, and Baylor transfer Mike Harris at Rover safety.
