South Alabama police chase ends in gunfire; 1 dead, state trooper and 2 others injured
An Alabama State Trooper was injured, and another person killed when gunfire erupted following a police chase in south Alabama Sunday evening.
Trooper Sgt. Jeremy Burkett said the incident began at 6:30 p.m. when a trooper tried to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation on Interstate 65 in Conecuh County. The driver failed to stop, and a pursuit ensued.
The chase traveled into Escambia County where the suspect vehicle left the road.
“Once off the roadway, an officer-involved shooting occurred,’’ Burkett said a news a release. He did not elaborate on how many people, or who, fired shots.
Burkett said one person died, and two others were injured. The injured were taken to an undisclosed hospital.
The trooper was also struck by gunfire and taken to an unnamed hospital for medical treatment. The extent of the trooper’s injuries, or those of the other two people, was not released.
The State Bureau of Investigation is leading the probe. Once complete, the findings will be turned over the Escambia County District Attorney’s Office.
