South Alabama lands transfer forward from Sun Belt rival

South Alabama picked up its third basketball transfer commitment of the 2023-24 cycle and second in two days Monday, this one from former Louisiana-Monroe forward Thomas Howell, a source confirmed to AL.com.

The 6-foot-8 Howell averaged 9.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game for the Warhawks — one of the Jaguars’ Sun Belt Conference rivals — this past season. A native of Natchitoches, La., has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Howell joins a pair of guards, Maxwell Land of St. Francis (who committed Sunday) and Samuel Tabe of Seton Hill, in the Jaguars’ current transfer class. South Alabama is expected to add one more transfer through the portal prior to next season.

NCAA rules prohibit coaches from publicly commenting on unsigned recruits, but South Alabama’s Richie Riley appeared to acknowledge Howell’s commitment via Twitter.

South Alabama went 17-15 in 2022-23, reaching the Sun Belt Conference tournament championship game. The Jaguars signed three high school recruits in November: guards John Broom (Jacksonville, Ala.) and Smurf Millender (Clear Brook, Texas) and forward Ethan Kizer (Metamora, Ill.).
