South Alabama knocks off top-seeded Southern Miss, 78-61
South Alabama pulled away in the final seven minutes for a 78-61 victory over top-seeded Southern Miss in the Sun Belt Conference tournament on Saturday in Pensacola, Fla.
With the victory, the Jaguars (18-15) advance to the conference tournament semifinals for the first time since 2009. They face the Troy-James Madison winner at 5 p.m. Sunday.
Owen White scored a career-high 26 points for South Alabama, which beat Southern Miss (25-7) for the second time in three meetings this season. The Jaguars took control with a 17-2 run in the second half, a sequence that included three 3-pointers by White.
Denijay Harris led Southern Miss with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
