South Alabama knocks off first-place Marshall, 91-85
South Alabama led throughout in a 91-85 victory at Marshall on Saturday, snapping a three-game losing streak.
The Jaguars (9-8 overall, 2-3 Sun Belt Conference) led by as many as 21 points in the second half before the Thundering Herd (9-8, 4-1) rallied to cut the lead to double digits late. However, South Alabama made four free throws in the final 40 seconds to hold on and knock Marshall out of a tie for first place in the Sun Belt standings.
Isiah Gaiter (25 points) and Tyrell Jones (23) both had big games offensively for South Alabama, which shot 52% from the field and made eight 3-pointers. Samuel Tabe added 18 points and five assists off the bench, while Thomas Howell had 11 points and eight rebounds and Judah Brown chipped in 10 points in his first extensive action in nearly two months due to an ankle injury.
Obinna Anochili-Killen scored a game-high 26 points and Cameron Crawford added 23 for Marshall, which shot 51.6% and made 10 3-pointers. However, the Thundering Herd turned the ball over 15 times to just nine for South Alabama.
South Alabama is back home Thursday to face arch-rival Troy, which was unbeaten in Sun Belt play heading into Saturday afternoon’s game vs. Southern Miss. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Mitchell Center.
