South Alabama has 5-game winning streak snapped with 71-63 overtime loss to ODU

South Alabama’s five-game winning streak ended in frustrating fashion on Saturday, as visiting Old Dominion claimed a 71-63 overtime victory at the Mitchell Center.

Sean Durugordon had a monster game for the Monarchs with 27 points and 18 rebounds (8 of them offensive), while Robert Davis added 25, including eight 3-pointers. The Jaguars (12-5, 4-1 Sun Belt) fell out of sole possession of first place in the conference with their first loss since Dec. 16 at TCU.

“We got punched in the mouth,” South Alabama coach Richie Riley said. “We take pride in doing that to other teams, and they did that to us. So credit to them.

“… What makes our identity is we’re underdogs, and we’re blue-collar, and we play much harder than you do. Today, we didn’t have any of that. We were not that. So, it’s disappointing.”

For a half on Saturday, South Alabama seemed well on its way to a sixth consecutive win. The Jaguars led by as many as 10 in the first half and by six at 39-33 at halftime.

But ODU (8-9, 4-1) punished South Alabama on the glass and in the paint in the second half and overtime, limiting the Jaguars to 30% shooting in the second half and holding them scoreless in the extra period. Durugordon scored the Monarchs’ final six points of regulation and six of their eight in overtime.

“They played pretty physical,” South Alabama guard Judah Brown said. “They were (very) physical. I think it just comes down to us playing hard. A lot of our offense comes from how hard we play defensively and we’re able to get out and get in transition, play with pace, and we weren’t able to do that today.”

Old Dominion never led by more than three in regulation, and held South Alabama without a field goal in the final five minutes other than JJ Wheat’s layup with 59 seconds left that put the Jaguars up 63-61. Durugordon put back a missed 3 by Davis to tie it with 43 seconds left.

South Alabama committed a shot-clock violation with 12.7 seconds remaining, and Davis missed a long 3 for ODU at the buzzer to send the game to overtime. Durugordon’s tip-in early in overtime gave the Monarchs the lead for good, then a 3-pointer by Davis — his first points since the 16:55 mark of the second half — all but sealed it.

“We played with no force defensively,” Riley said. “Everybody talks about our zone. It’s one of the best defenses in the country from a percentage standpoint, scoring standpoint, all the stats, all that stuff.

“Today, it was nonexistent. We ended up having to play a lot of junk.”

Myles Corey scored 20 points for South Alabama, while Barry Dunning added 17 with eight rebounds. Wheat was the only other Jaguars player in double figures, scoring 12 off the bench.

South Alabama made three 3-pointers in the game’s first four minutes to take a 12-5 lead, but hit only three from long-range after that. The Jaguars shot just 25% (6-for-25) on 3s in the game, went 11-for-18 at the free-throw line and got out-rebounded 46-34.

“From a defensive standpoint, they switched everything,” Riley said. “They trusted their five men to guard our guards. They basically trusted all their guys to guard our guys.

“So, we ended up in some situations where we tried to space and drive it. We missed a lot on the rim. Obviously, shot it very poorly from three, shot it poorly from the free-throw line. All those things are glaring. I mean, we only scored 24 points the second half, gave up 30, but we didn’t have it all day.”

South Alabama continues its four-game home stand on Wednesday, hosting Southern Miss at 7 p.m.
