South Alabama gets commitment from JUCO edge rusher Jalyn Durgan

South Alabama added a third 2024 verbal commitment of the day late Sunday, as East Mississippi Community College edge rusher Jayln Durgan announced he will sign with the Jaguars.

Durgan (6-foot-4, 250 pounds) joins a pair of defensive backs, Damyrion Darby of Jefferson Davis County (Miss.) High School and Jordan Scruggs of Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College, as Sunday commitments to the Jaguars. South Alabama now has 17 verbal commitments for the 2024 class.

Durgan totaled 35 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and a fumble recovery in 2023 for East Mississippi, which went 10-3 and reached the NJCAA championship game. He played his high school football at St. Martin in Ocean Springs, Miss., totaling 77 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, four sacks and a forced fumble as a senior in 2021.

Durgan also has scholarship offers from Arkansas State, Charlotte, Georgia State, Louisiana-Monroe, Southern Miss, Texas State, Troy and Western Kentucky, among other schools. He is expected to enroll in January and participate in spring practice, and has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

South Alabama has a need at the edge rusher position, with the impending graduation of both starting Bandit end Jamie Sheriff and Wolf linebacker Quentin Wilfawn. Those two have combined for 9.5 of the Jaguars’ 27 sacks this season heading into the Dec. 23 68 Ventures Bowl.

National signing day for the 2024 class is Wednesday.
