South Alabama football announces 9 portal additions

South Alabama officially announced the addition of nine football transfer portal additions who have committed to the Jaguars since the end of spring practice.

Now on the roster are running back Iverson Celestine (Tulane), wide receiver Micah Woods (Buffalo), tight end Rod Gibbs (Texas Southern), offensive linemen Ethan Hubbard (Duke) and Jayden Hobson (Mississippi State), defensive lineman Tre’Darius Brown (Texas Tech), outside linebacker Courtney McBride (Florida Atlantic), inside linebacker Darius McKenzie (Maine) and safety Trent Singleton (Mississippi State). All are enrolled in summer classes and participating in offseason workouts.

Of the newcomers, McKenzie and McBride are considered most likely to make an impact in 2024. McKenzie totaled 37 tackles with three tackles for loss in just five games at Maine last season before suffering a season-ending injury, while McBride had 57 tackles, 14 tackles for loss and five sacks in 29 career games at FAU.

South Alabama signed seven players from the transfer portal during the December/January cycle: tight end Andrew Bench (Bowling Green), defensive tackle Bryston Dixon (Georgia Tech), kicker Laith Marjan (East Carolina), offensive lineman Malachi Preciado (Purdue), wide receiver Noah Toster (Chowan), linebacker Aakil Washington (Liberty) and safety Lardarius Webb Jr. (Oklahoma State). Those seven participated in spring practice after enrolling in school in January.

South Alabama still has one scholarship available for 2024 and could add another transfer before practice begins in August. May 1 was the deadline for players to enter the transfer portal, but they can choose their new school at any time.

South Alabama went 7-6 and won the 68 Ventures Bowl in 2023. The Jaguars open the 2024 season at home on Aug. 31 vs. North Texas.
