South Alabama falls to Louisiana in Sun Belt title game
South Alabama’s NCAA tournament run came up one game short.
Louisiana rallied for a 71-66 victory in the Sun Belt Conference championship game on Monday night at Pensacola Bay Center, overcoming a halftime deficit for the third time this season against South Alabama. The eighth-seeded Jaguars (19-16) won three games in four days in the tournament, but could not solve the second-seeded Ragin’ Cajuns (26-7).
Isaiah Moore scored a season-high 33 points for South Alabama, which had an opportunity tie the game in the final seconds. However, Owen White’s long 3-point attempt rimmed out with 2 seconds remaining, and Louisiana’s Kentrell Garnett made two free throws to put the game away.
Themus Folks led the Ragin’ Cajuns with 23 points, while tournament Most Outstanding Player Jordan Brown had 13 points and 16 rebounds. Kevin Samuel added 12 points and six rebounds for South Alabama, but no other Jaguars scored in double figures.
South Alabama was after its first Sun Belt Conference tournament championship since 2006, and its first NCAA tournament berth since 2008. Louisiana won its first Sun Belt tournament title since 2014.
