South Alabama dominates 2nd half in 35-17 win over SLU
If you’re not going to play well, play well enough.
That’s what South Alabama did on Saturday vs. Southeastern Louisiana, waking from a sluggish first half to win 35-17 at Hancock Whitney Stadium. The Jaguars even their record to 1-1 following an opening week loss to Tulane.
On Saturday, the Jaguars scored 35 of the game’s final 45 points after spotting the Lions (0-2) a 7-0 lead. La’Damian Webb ran for two touchdowns in abbreviated duty for South Alabama, while Carter Bradley passed for 257 yards — including a program-record 84-yard touchdown to Caullin Lacy on the first play of the fourth quarter.
South Alabama’s defense also helped re-take the momentum in the second half, forcing consecutive 3-and-outs to begin the second half. The Jaguars’ offense scored after each.
Webb, who spent most of preseason camp recovering from offseason surgery, did not enter the game until late in the second quarter and played only three series overall. He ended the day with 79 yards and two touchdowns on just seven carries.
Webb’s 13-yard touchdown run gave South Alabama its first lead at 14-7 with 8:50 left in the third. After SLU punted, the Jaguars drove for Kentrel Bullock’s 8-yard TD run — the first of his career — to make it 21-7 at the 3:52 mark.
After another punt, the Jaguars struck quickly to take a 28-7 lead. Bradley flipped a short pass on the perimeter to Lacy, and the speedy Mobile native did the rest, outrunning the Lions’ secondary to the end zone for both the longest pass play and longest touchdown pass in South Alabama program history.
Southeastern Louisiana added Riley Callaghan’s 30-yard field goal to pull within 28-10, but South Alabama then ran out most of the clock with a long drive that ended in Marco Lee’s 13-yard touchdown run to make it 35-10 with 3:28 left.
SLU scored the game’s final points, Harlan Dixon’s one-yard touchdown run with 41 seconds left. South Alabama then knelt on the ball to end the game.
Southeastern Louisiana pushed South Alabama around for much of the first half, taking a 7-0 lead with a 13-play, 93-yard drive in the second quarter. Zachary Clement — the second of two SLU quarterbacks — hit tight end Ivan Drobosky in the back of the end zone with a five-yard touchdown pass with 5:25 left in the half.
South Alabama stayed in the game with turnovers, including a fumble recovery by Wesley Miller in the end zone in the first quarter. Safety Jaden Voisin hit SLU running back Rodeo Graham at the one-yard line, jarring the ball loose.
The Jaguars finally got on the board with a quick five-play drive late in the half, capped by Webb’s two-yard touchdown run. Webb also had a 33-yard run on the drive, after Bradley hit Devin Voisin for 29 yards.
That score tied the game 7-7 with 4:02 to go before halftime. Yam Banks picked off a pass for the Jaguars moments later, keeping it a tie game at the break.
South Alabama played without a handful of key players who were injured last week vs. Tulane. Safety Jalen Jordan was in street clothes with a brace on his foot/ankle, while running back Braylon McReynolds (shoulder) was not spotted on the sideline.
In addition, linebacker Khalil Jacobs was ejected for targeting on a late hit on the quarter in the third quarter. Jacobs will also have to sit out the first half of next week’s game at Oklahoma State.
South Alabama has now won nine straight games vs. FCS competition, and 10 of 11 overall. The lone blemish was a 22-21 defeat to Southern Utah to begin the 2013 season.
Kickoff for South Alabama at Oklahoma State next Saturday is set for 6 p.m. in Stillwater. That game will stream live via ESPN+.
