South Alabama DB Jamarrien Burt to enter transfer portal
South Alabama defensive back Jamarrien Burt plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, he announced Monday.
Burt played in 11 games mostly on special teams for the Jaguars after transferring from Oklahoma in 2023, totaling three tackles. He has three seasons of eligibility remaining.
Burt announced his decision via Twitter. A source later confirmed his departure to AL.com.
Burt participated in spring practice at South Alabama this year, and had an interception in Saturday’s spring game. He is the younger brother of Jaguars safety Brian Dillard, who is competing for a starting job and who will be a senior in 2024.
Burt was involved in a bizarre incident at the end of the Jaguars’ season-ending 68 Ventures Bowl, a 59-10 win over Eastern Michigan. Burt and his teammates were lined up near the South Alabama student section singing along with the school’s alma mater, when Eastern Michigan’s Korey Hernandez punched Burt from behind, apparently in retaliation for some in-game chippiness between the two.
Dillard — who was standing nearby — tackled Hernandez, then several other South Alabama and Eastern Michigan players joined in the melee. Hernandez, who was left with a bloodied lip, later issued a public apology to Burt, former South Alabama coach Kane Wommack and the Jaguars’ program.
In addition to Burt, two other South Alabama scholarship players are not expected back in 2024. According to a source, wide receiver Caeleb Schlachter and defensive back Tremel States-Jones also intend to enter the transfer portal.
Schlachter and States-Jones, both natives of Canada, signed with South Alabama in 2022 out of Clearwater Academy International in Florida. States-Jones played in nine games as a back-up safety and special-teamer in 2022 before redshirting last season.
Schlachter is yet to appear in a game in his college career. He redshirted in 2022, then missed all of 2023 while recovering from knee surgery.
The departures of Burt, Schlachter and States-Jones leave new head coach Major Applewhite and South Alabama with around nine open scholarships for 2024. To enter the NCAA transfer portal, players must notify their schools of their intention to depart before April 30.
South Alabama is expected to add a number of portal transfers prior to the beginning of summer workouts in June. The Jaguars went 7-6 in 2023 under Wommack, who left to become defensive coordinator at Alabama.
