South Alabama defensive end Brock Higdon spends his Saturdays trying to terrorize opposing quarterbacks, but for one day put a scare into many of his teammates.

Higdon, a 6-foot-7 sophomore from Pelham, dressed up as one of the mannequins that stand in the lobby of the South Alabama football building, typically modeling the latest Jaguar uniforms. Last Friday morning, Higdon was involved in a classic Halloween prank, donning a full uniform, a black sweatsuit and a black mask to disguise his identity.

When unsuspecting teammates and coaches entered the lobby to prepare for their trip to Arkansas State, Higdon would “come to life” and charge at them like Frankenstein’s monster. The whole scene was captured for posterity by South Alabama’s football video crew, and posted on social media Monday morning, which was Halloween.

“It was just a really fun thing to do, to prank all my teammates,” Higdon said. “The atmosphere in the locker room is great and this is an example of that. It was great to be part of and get noticed, even though I’m wearing a mask.

“My dad called me and was like ‘did you see that video?’ And I was like ‘yep, that was me.’ That made him laugh.”

There were several strong reactions, with several players jumping or shrinking away in fright. One player, wide receiver Devin Voisin, was so rattled he had to take a seat in a nearby chair.

Head coach Kane Wommack also fell victim to the “Brock-monster” as he walked into the lobby carrying his traveling dress clothes. Wommack said he saw the cameras, but never saw Higdon.

“The worst part is they had asked me before, ‘can we do this?,’” Wommack said. “But I wasn’t paying attention. It was 5:30 in the morning and (Higdon) looked like just one of those mannequins because he’s so tall. But he got me.

“… I think this team has a fine balance between the standard of accountability we need to have and being able to enjoy each one another. That’s a fine line. But I love the guys being able to enjoy one another and connecting with their coaches when they get a chance. That’s one of the special things about college football.”

South Alabama (6-2, 3-1 Sun Belt) is at Georgia Southern (5-3, 2-2) at 3 p.m. Saturday. The game will stream live via ESPN+.
