South Alabama basketball’s Millender enters transfer portal

South Alabama basketball player Marcus “Smurf” Millender has entered the NCAA transfer portal, AL.com has confirmed.

Millender was arguably the Jaguars’ top returning player for next season after averaging 9.7 points, 3.3 assists and 2.9 rebounds in 32 games in 2023-24. The 5-foot-9 point guard, a Houston native, has three seasons of eligibility remaining.

Millender’s departure means South Alabama must replace four of its top five scorers from last season after Tyrell Jones, Isiah Gaiter and Samuel Tabe all exhausted their eligibility. Only Maxwell Land, who missed all but nine games this past season with a knee injury, is currently set to return for the Jaguars in 2024-25.

Millender is the first South Alabama basketball player to leave via the portal in this cycle, though forward Thomas Howell and guard Judah Brown chose to end their careers rather than play a final season in college. Players must notify their schools by May 1 that they intend to enter the portal.

South Alabama went 16-16 last season, its sixth under coach Richie Riley.
