South Alabama basketball stunned by last-place Louisiana-Monroe, 77-66
The second part of South Alabama’s first two-game losing streak of the season was especially ill-timed and wholly inexplicable.
The Jaguars lost 77-66 on the road Monday night at Louisiana-Monroe, a team that was previously winless in Sun Belt Conference play and had dropped 10 straight overall. South Alabama (14-7, 6-3 Sun Belt) falls into a four-way tie for second place in the conference standings after its second consecutive loss and third in its last five.
South Alabama — which lost 65-55 at Troy on Saturday — trailed nearly throughout on Monday, including 35-27 at halftime and by as many as 16 points in the second half. The Jaguars could never put together much offensively, shooting 34% overall and a wretched 25% from 3-point range.
Dylan Fasoyiro led South Alabama with 15 points, while Myles Corey added 14 and John Broom 12. However, Barry Dunning and Judah Brown — the Jaguars’ second- and third-leading scorers — combined for just nine points on 4-for-23 shooting, going 1-for-11 on 3-pointers.
Meanwhile, ULM (5-17, 1-8) could hardly miss, connecting on 40.4% of their overall shots, with 11 3-pointers. The Warhawks took advantage of some uncharacteristically sloppy defense from the Jaguars to make 24 of 26 free throws.
Coltie Young led ULM with a game-high 27 points, including five 3-pointers. Makai Willis scored 17 with seven rebounds and went 9-for-9 at the line, while Tyreese Watson scored 10 with nine assists and was 5-for-5 on free throws.
The two teams face off again in Mobile on Thursday, with tip-off set for 7 p.m. at the Mitchell Center. Monday’s game was originally scheduled for last Thursday, but was postponed three days after winter storm Enzo made it impossible for the Jaguars to travel safely to Monroe.
South Alabama is now a game back in the standings behind Arkansas State, and tied for second with Troy, Appalachian State and Marshall. The Jaguars beat the Red Wolves in Mobile on Jan. 9, but must travel to Jonesboro on Feb. 19.
