South Alabama basketball rolls past Coastal Carolina 84-59, now tied for 2nd in Sun Belt
South Alabama regained its shooting touch in an 84-59 victory at Coastal Carolina on Wednesday night.
Myles Corey scored a game-high 27 points for the Jaguars, who shot 55% from the field and made 15 3-pointers. South Alabama (16-8, 8-4 Sun Belt Conference) also got 15 points from Barry Dunning, 12 from Elijah Ormiston and 10 from Jayden Cooper in scoring its third road win of the year by at least 25 points.
South Alabama is now tied for second place in the Sun Belt with three other teams — Troy, James Madison and Appalachian State (Marshall was also 7-4 heading into its late Wednesday game with first-place Arkansas State, which was 9-2). The Trojans saw their four-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday night, falling 64-61 to the Dukes in Charlottesville, Va.
South Alabama led 43-20 at halftime and by as many as 38 points in the second half before Coastal Carolina (8-16, 1-11) used an 18-0 run to get within 20 at 71-51 with 6:10 remaining. However, Corey hit back-to-back 3s for the Jaguars, who led comfortably the rest of the way.
With the win, South Alabama also equaled its total from last season in both overall and Sun Belt victories. The Jaguars finished 16-16, 8-10 in 2023-24.
Jordan Battle led the Chanticleers with 23 points, including seven 3-pointers. Henry Abraham added 15 for Coastal, which lost its ninth straight game.
