South Alabama basketball rallies past Louisiana in OT, 62-58

South Alabama basketball picked up a much-needed win on the road Saturday night, beating Louisiana 62-58 in overtime after trailing by 14 early in the second half.

Myles Corey scored all 17 of his points in the second half and overtime for the Jaguars, including three in the extra period. His layup with 41 seconds remaining in OT gave South Alabama (15-8, 7-4 Sun Belt Conference) the lead for good at 60-58, then he made one of two free throws with 18 seconds remaining to put the Jaguars up three.

After Chancellor White missed a 3-pointer for Louisiana with six seconds left, South Alabama’s Cantia Rahming made a free throw to finally ice the victory. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Jaguars, who are now in a four-way tie for third place in the conference standings.

For a while, it looked as if South Alabama was on the way to a fourth consecutive loss. Louisiana (7-16, 5-6) led 31-18 at halftime and 36-22 with 17:33 to play before the Jaguars began to rally behind Corey and Barry Dunning.

Dunning finished with 18 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, five of those on the offensive end. South Alabama won despite shooting just 4-for-24 on 3-pointers and 14-for-25 from the free-throw line.

Elijah Ormiston added 13 points and four rebounds off the bench for South Alabama, while Dylan Fasoyiro finished with seven points and six rebounds. Judah Brown, Randy Brady and John Broom were all held scoreless for the Jaguars, though Broom finished with five steals.

Mostapha El Moutaouakkil also had a double-double for Louisiana, finishing with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Kentrell Garnett was the only other Ragin’ Cajuns player in double figures with 12 points.

South Alabama stays on the road Wednesday, traveling to Coastal Carolina for a 6 p.m. game.
