South Alabama basketball looking for assistant coach

The longest-tenured member of Richie Riley’s South Alabama basketball staff is no longer with the program, Riley confirmed to AL.com.

Tyler Parker has left the Jaguars for “another opportunity,” Riley said. He declined to elaborate on where Parker might be headed, but said that the decision to leave was Parker’s.

Parker was on Riley’s original South Alabama staff as director of operations in 2018-19, was elevated to assistant coach the following season, and later added the title of recruiting coordinator. He also coached under Riley during his final season at Nicholls in 2017-18.

Riley said he hopes to have a hire made by June 1, when players report for summer classes and workouts. The assistant coach vacancy was listed on the NCAA job board Monday.

Parker did not immediately respond to a request for comment from AL.com. As of early Wednesday afternoon, he had not yet updated his Twitter account to reflect his departure from South Alabama.

• South Alabama is also looking to add one more player through the transfer portal after freshman guard Jamar Franklin announced over the weekend he’s leaving the program. Franklin played in 32 games with three starts in 2022-23, averaging 4.6 points and 12.7 minutes per game.

The Jaguars have already added four players through the portal: forward Thomas Howell (Louisiana-Monroe) and guards Isiah Gaiter (Assumption), Maxwell Land (St. Francis) and Samuel Tabe (Seton Hill). In addition to Franklin, forward Diante Smith and Tyler Shirley have also left via the portal.

South Alabama returns five players from last year’s team: starting guard Tyrell Jones, three-point specialist Judah Brown and backup forwards Marshall Kearing, Julian Margrave and Elijah Ormiston. The Jaguars signed high school recruits John Broom (Jacksonville High School), Smurf Millender (Clear Brook, Texas) and Ethan Kizer (Metamora, Ill.) in November.

“We’re looking for the best possible guy we can get,” Riley said. “We’ve got flexibility to take multiple positions. We’ve signed three perimeter guys and one front-court guy, so we’ve got some flexibility. I think any of the perimeter spots outside of a point guard, possibly a bigger wing or a stretch four (power forward). … We’re trying to find the perfect fit.”

South Alabama went 19-16 and reached the Sun Belt Conference tournament championship game in 2022-23.
