South Alabama basketball falls at Louisiana, 74-64

Louisiana pulled away late for a 74-64 victory over South Alabama on Friday night, in the regular-season finale for both teams.

With the loss, the Jaguars saw their five-game winning streak snapped and suffered just their second defeat since Jan. 26. South Alabama (16-15, 9-9 Sun Belt Conference) will be the No. 8 seed for the Sun Belt tournament, and will face No. 9 Appalachian State at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Pensacola, Fla.

On Friday night, South Alabama led 29-28 at halftime before Louisiana (23-7, 13-5) controlled much of the final 20 minutes. The Ragin’ Cajuns used an 11-1 run midway through the half to turn a 47-45 lead into a 58-46 advantage with 6:36 to play and were never seriously threatened after that.

“We didn’t play very well,” South Alabama coach Richie Riley said. “We didn’t do the things that had been helping us be successful. It was obvious with the result. Their physicality bothered us.”

Jordan Brown led the way for Louisiana with 28 points and 11 rebounds, while Jalen Dalcourt and Michael Thomas combined for 21 points off the bench. The Ragin’ Cajuns made just two 3-pointers and missed 10 free throws, but won the rebounding battle 40-27.

Isaiah Moore led South Alabama with 22 points, while Owen White added 15, but only three in the second half. After going 4-for-9 on 3-pointers in the first half, the Jaguars were 0-for-6 from long range in the second.
