South Alabama basketball beats Appalachian State 74-57

South Alabama’s basketball team on Saturday showed no hangover from a frustrating loss at Troy two days earlier.

The Jaguars shot 70% in the first half and led by double-digits for the final 30 minutes of a 74-57 victory over Appalachian State at the Mitchell Center. The win was the fourth in five games for South Alabama, with the only loss a crushing 61-57 defeat Thursday, in which the Trojans scored the game’s final seven points.

“With the winning streak we had, and even the Troy game, we played about 155 minutes of pretty good basketball,” South Alabama guard Owen White said. “And that was as bad of a choke job as you’ll see, at Troy. Not just falling apart and focusing on that five minutes at Troy, and realizing ‘hey, we’re still in the middle of a pretty good stretch, and let’s get back to what we’re doing,’ we did a pretty good job of that.”

South Alabama (12-14, 6-8 Sun Belt Conference) led by double digits at times against Troy as well, but never let up against Appalachian State (14-13, 7-6). The Jaguars jumped out to leads of 8-2, 20-6 and 26-8 in the early going before settling into a 40-26 halftime lead.

South Alabama never led by fewer than 11 in the second half, and got up by as many as 25 in the final seven minutes. App State shot just 37% from the floor, 32% in the first half.

“A lot about hoops, and a lot about life is how you bounce back,” South Alabama coach Richie Riley said. “That was the challenge for our team today. They bounced back. They showed some real resiliency. We knew we were playing a good team and we came out with the mentality to be the aggressor. We got a lead and built on it. … We played maybe our most complete game on both sides — offensively and defensively — of the whole year.”

South Alabama stuck with seven players for the majority of the game, and scored 42 points in the paint and 17 off turnovers. Isaiah Moore (16 points), Tyrell Jones (15) and White (14) did most of the heavy lifting offensively, with center Kevin Samuel going for eight points, nine rebounds and four blocks after getting shut out offensively at Troy.

South Alabama essentially put the game away between the 7:30- and 6-minute marks of the first half. The Jaguars executed three rim-rocking dunks in a 65-second stretch, with Greg Parham and White connecting with Samuel for alley-oops and White throwing one down of his own after stealing the ball near midcourt to put his team up 18.

“I think we just know we’re really good when we get in the paint,” White said. “… (Moore) started it off early getting in the paint, and that created stuff outside. A lot of it was our defense translating to offense, but specifically, it was getting in the paint and being the tougher team down low.”

Donovan Gregory led App State with 14 points, while Terence Harcum had 11 and Justin Abson 10. The Mountaineers shot just 4-for-22 on 3-pointers.

South Alabama has four Sun Belt games remaining, including home dates next week with Southern Miss and Louisiana-Monroe. The Jaguars are in 10th place in the 14-team conference, and need to avoid the bottom four to stay out of the play-in round in the Sun Belt tournament.

“I think we’re getting better, even though we lost Thursday,” Riley said. “I like what our guys are doing, from an every-day approach, how we’re practicing, how we’re preparing. … We need to see some success. We’ve lost a lot of close games this year, but we’re seeing our hard work pay off some.”
