South Alabama basketball adds D2 transfer Samuel Tabe
South Alabama picked up its first basketball transfer commitment of the 2023-24 cycle on Sunday from Division 2 guard Samuel Tabe, a source told AL.com.
Tabe averaged 16.4 points and 8.2 rebounds per game this past season at Seton Hill University, earning first-team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference honors. A 6-foot-5 native of Beltsville, Md., he has one season of eligibility remaining.
Coaches are not permitted to comment publicly on unsigned recruits, but South Alabama coach Richie Riley appeared to acknowledge Tabe’s commitment via Twitter on Sunday:
South Alabama had great success in the Division 2 transfer market last year, adding guards Isaiah Moore and Owen White and forward Elijah Ormiston. Moore led the team in scoring and was a first-team All-Sun Belt Conference selection, while White was the team’s best defender and 3-point shooter.
The Jaguars are expected to add 3-4 more transfers prior to summer workouts after losing Moore, White, center Kevin Samuel and sixth man Greg Parham to graduation. Forward Diante Smith — who sat out all of this past season for personal reasons — has elected to enter the transfer portal, and still other players could also opt to leave.
South Alabama, which went 19-14 in 2022-23 and reached the Sun Belt Conference tournament championship game, signed three high school recruits in November: guards John Broome (Jacksonville) and Smurf Millender (Clear Brook, Texas) and forward Ethan Kizer (Metamora, Ill.).
