South Alabama was buried by a Louisiana offensive barrage in a Sun Belt Conference doubleheader on Saturday, losing 22-5 and 10-6 at Stanky Field.

The Jaguars lost two of three in the series after winning Friday’s opener 12-11 to snap a seven-game slide. South Alabama (9-15, 1-5 Sun Belt) led only once on Saturday, however, holding a 2-1 advantage after two innings in the first game before the Ragin’ Cajuns (18-7, 5-1) exploded for 31 runs in their remaining 16 at-bats of the twin bill.

Will Turner was among the lone offensive bright spots for South Alabama in the doubleheader, going a combined 4-for-6, homering twice and driving in three. However, the Jaguars could not match the Ragin’ Cajuns thunderous offense.

Louisiana catcher Julian Brock was the overall hitting star, homering in both games, driving in six runs and scoring five. The Ragin’ Cajuns totaled 26 hits and walked 20 times between the two games.

Louisiana 10, South Alabama 6 (second game of doubleheader)

With the game tied 6-6 after five innings, Louisiana resorted to small ball to pull away for the win. In the sixth, Kyle DeBarge walked, stole second, took third on a fly ball and then beat the throw home when Heath Hood grounded to shortstop, giving the Ragin’ Cajuns a 7-6 lead.

South Alabama managed just one hit after the sixth inning against Louisiana left-hander Ben Tate, who pitched the final 3 1/3 innings for the save. Still, the Jaguars had opportunities that proved fruitless, putting two on with one out in the eighth and loading the bases with two out in the ninth.

Louisiana tacked on three in the top of the eighth thanks to some sloppy South Alabama defense. DeBarge beat out an infield single to start the inning (on a play that was initially ruled an out but was overturned via replay), then took second on a wild pickoff attempt by South Alabama pitcher Colson Lawrence, stole third and came home on Carson Roccaforte’s single to make it 8-6.

Roccaforte then stole two bases, scoring on a wild throw from catcher Cole Ketzner when Heath Hood tried to steal second. Hood went to third on the play, coming home on Brock’s infield grounder.

Brock gave Louisiana a 3-0 lead in the top of the first with his third homer of the series, a huge blast to straightaway center off South Alabama starter Mitchell Heer. The Ragin’ Cajuns catcher ended the weekend 5-for-10 with seven RBIs, five walks and six runs scored, and has 34 RBIs in 25 games this season.

JG Bell scored South Alabama’s first run on a wild pitch in the first, then Will Veillon’s RBI double in the third put Louisiana up 4-1. Turner’s first homer — a two-run shot — cut the score to 4-3, but the Ragin’ Cajuns got two in the fifth on a single, a double, John Taylor’s sacrifice fly and Veillon’s squeeze bunt go up 6-3.

South Alabama tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on Turner’s solo homer, Lawrence’s bases-loaded walk and Hunter Donaldson’s RBI groundout. That would be the last run the Jaguars would score in the game, as they were shut out over the final four innings.

Reliever J.T. Etheridge (1-1) got the win for Louisiana despite giving up the lead in the sixth. He allowed a run on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings.

Grant Wood, the third of six South Alabama pitchers, took the loss to fall to 3-1 after allowing a run on a walk in 1 1/3 innings. Sam Knowlton — who pitched the seventh inning — and Danny Diaz — who worked the ninth — accounted for the only 1-2-3 innings for the Jaguars in the game.

Louisiana 22, South Alabama 5 (first game of doubleheader)

The Ragin’ Cajuns hit five home runs among their 18 hits and took advantage of 12 walks to score the most runs the Jaguars have ever allowed in a home Sun Belt game.

South Alabama led 2-1 after two innings, but Louisiana scored four in the third, seven in the sixth, four in the seventh and six in the ninth. The Jaguars have allowed more runs in a game only three times in the program’s 57-year history — a 26-5 loss to Missouri in 1996, a 24-4 loss at former conference rival New Orleans in 1993 and a 25-24 win over Eastern Illinois in 2004.

Taylor put the Ragin’ Cajuns on top for good with a two-run homer in the third, and also had a two-run triple in the sixth. Brock, Hood, Veillon and Mason Zambo also all went deep for Louisiana.

South Alabama hit two home runs of its own — Trey Lewis’ solo shot in the sixth and Joseph Sullivan’s two-run blast in the seventh. The Jaguars’ other runs came on RBI singles by Micah Morgan and Erick Orbeta in the second, which gave USA a brief 2-1 lead.

Jackson Nezuh (4-0) got the win for Louisiana, allowing three runs on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks in 5 2/3 innings. Cooper Rawls pitched the final 3 1/3 for his first save of the season.

South Alabama starter Jeremy Lee (0-4) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits with five walks and four strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. The Jaguars used eight pitchers in the game, with only Eric Lin and Rob Yates getting out with allowing a run.

South Alabama hosts Southeastern Louisiana in a non-conference game Tuesday.
