South Alabama baseball eliminated from Sun Belt tournament

South Alabama won’t play in the Sun Belt Conference baseball tournament this year for just the second time in the event’s history.

The Jaguars lost 7-2 at Arkansas State on Thursday night, officially eliminating them from postseason contention. The only previous time South Alabama failed to make the Sun Belt tournament was in 1985.

South Alabama (23-29, 11-17 Sun Belt) also lost its eighth straight game, a program record. The Jaguars have not won since beating Troy 9-4 on April 30.

On Thursday, the Jaguars got within 3-2 in the fourth inning before the Red Wolves scored three in the bottom of the fifth. South Alabama made three errors in the game and managed just one extra-base hit.

South Alabama went into the weekend needing to sweep Arkansas State and have Old Dominion sweep Georgia State to claim the last of 10 spots for the Sun Belt tournament. The Panthers rallied to beat the Monarchs 5-4 in 10 innings, which would have eliminated the Jaguars even if they had beaten the Red Wolves.

South Alabama’s season concludes with games at 3 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday. The Sun Belt tournament begins Tuesday in Montgomery.
