South Alabama adds former Tulane running back for 2024

South Alabama has added a transfer portal commitment from former Tulane running back Iverson Celestine.

Celestine — a 3-star recruit in the 2021 signing class — played in 14 games the last three seasons for the Green Wave, rushing for a total of 428 yards. The Mandeville, La., native has two years of eligibility remaining.

Celestine recently updated his Instagram bio to include: “RB @southalabamafb” and posted the following photo confirming his commitment:

Hobson is the Jaguars’ ninth portal commitment in the 2024 spring cycle, following offensive linemen Ethan Hubbard (Duke) and Jayden Hobson (Mississippi State), linebacker Darius McKenzie (Maine), safety Trent Singleton (Mississippi State), tight end Rodrecas Gibbs (Texas Southern), outside linebacker Courtney McBride (Florida Atlantic), defensive lineman Tre’Darius Brown (Texas Tech) and wide receiver Micah Woods (Buffalo). All wre expected to officially join the team for summer classes and workouts at the end of May.

South Alabama lost two-time 1,000-yard rusher La’Damian Webb to graduation after the 2023 season, but returns four scholarship running backs this fall. Sophomore Braylon McReynolds and junior Kentrel Bullock are expected to shoulder much of the rushing load in 2024, with redshirt freshmen Jarvis Durr and P.J. Martin and incoming true freshman Da’Marion “Fluff” Bothwell also in the mix.

The transfer portal closed for new entries as of May 1, but players already in the portal can commit to and sign with new schools at any time. The Jaguars seven players during the January portal period: center Malachi Preciado (Purdue), tight end Andrew Bench (Bowling Green), wide receiver Noah Toster (Chowan), defensive lineman Bryston Dixon (Georgia Tech), outside linebacker Aakil Washington (Liberty), safety Lardarius Webb Jr. (Oklahoma State) and kicker Laith Marjan (East Carolina).

South Alabama went 7-6 and won the 68 Ventures Bowl last season. The Jaguars open the 2024 season at home Aug. 31 vs. North Texas.
