South Alabama adds former Mississippi State safety through transfer portal
South Alabama has added its second transfer portal recruit of the 2024 spring cycle, with former Mississippi State safety Trent Singleton set to join the Jaguars’ program this summer.
Singleton did not play in a game for the Bulldogs in 2023 after redshirting as a true freshman the previous year, and has three seasons of eligibility remaining. He was a three-star recruit in the 2022 signing class out of Raymond High School in the Jackson area, and played in the 2021 Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic.
The 6-foot, 195-pound Singleton was the second player to commit to South Alabama out of the transfer portal on Monday, following former Maine linebacker Darius McKenzie. Singleton made his announcement via Twitter/X:
Singleton continues a pipeline of former Mississippi State players to South Alabama, a list that also includes current Jaguars safety Wesley Miller and offensive linemen Reed Buys and Lucas Taylor. USA cornerbacks coach Jay Hopson spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons as Director of High School Relations with the Bulldogs.
Senior Jaden Voisin and junior Mike Harris are projected to start at safety for South Alabama in 2024, with Miller (a redshirt sophomore), junior Rickey Hyatt and redshirt freshman Cole Blaylock also in the mix for playing time. Oklahoma State transfer Lardarius Webb Jr., senior Brian Dillard and sophomore Christopher Wallace are competing at the Husky (nickel) position, vacated when three-year starter Yam Banks transferred to Ole Miss.
Three other South Alabama safeties have left the program since the end of spring practice. Veteran Keith Gallmon — a former three-year starter for the Jaguars and sophomores Jamarrien Burt (Dillard’s younger brother) and Tremel States-Jones have all entered the transfer portal.
The transfer portal closed for new entries as of May 1, but players already in the portal can commit to and sign with new schools at any time. The Jaguars added seven players during the January portal period: offensive lineman Malachi Preciado (Purdue), wide receiver Noah Toster (Chowan), tight end Andrew Bench (Bowling Green), defensive lineman Bryston Dixon (Georgia Tech), outside linebacker Aakil Washington (Liberty), safety Lardarius Webb Jr. (Oklahoma State) and kicker Laith Marjan (East Carolina).
South Alabama begins summer workouts in early June. The Jaguars open the 2024 season at home Aug. 31 vs. North Texas.
