South Alabama adds ex-Bowling Green TE Andrew Bench

South Alabama on Saturday added a transfer portal commitment from tight end Andrew Bench of Bowling Green.

Bench played in 45 games with six starts the last four seasons for the Falcons, totaling 16 receptions for 203 yards and three touchdowns. The Elmore, Ohio, native has one season of eligibility remaining.

The 6-foot-5, 255-pound Bench is South Alabama’s third addition from the transfer portal since the end of the regular season, joining offensive lineman Malachi Preciado (Purdue) and defensive lineman Bryston Dixon (Georgia Tech). All three are enrolled in spring semester classes and will participate in spring practice.

Bench has not publicly announced his commitment to South Alabama, but did change his bio on Twitter/X to “USA TE” and updated his profile picture to show himself in Jaguars gear. A source confirmed to AL.com that Bench has joined the USA team.

Bench joins a South Alabama tight end group that lost multi-year contributors Lincoln Sefcik, Brandon Crum and Jacob Hopper after the 2023 season. The only scholarship tight ends set to return for 2024 prior to Bench’s commitment were senior DJ Thomas-Jones and freshman Trent Thomas, while the Jaguars signed high school tight end Will Loerzel in December.
