Some Alabama weather alert radios will be offline during storms: Time to prepare

Today’s storms come as the National Weather Service office in Mobile undergoes a long-planned software update, which cannot be rescheduled.

Strong to severe storms will be the most likely starting in the afternoon, and they could last into the nighttime hours.

The update will not affect forecasts and warnings, but it does mean that NOAA weather radio will be offline in several areas in southwest and south-central Alabama:

South Alabama weather radios in Greenville, Dozier, Jackson, Brewton and Mobile will play a recorded message until the upgrade is finished on May 29.

The weather service office in Birmingham had its computer system upgraded last week during another round of severe weather.

The weather service cautioned that it is always important for the public to have multiple ways to get severe weather warnings.

Those methods could include weather apps, local emergency management, TV/radio/Internet alerts and weather-savvy friends and family.

The Huntsville weather service office will have its software upgrade in early June.
