Some Social Security recipients will see a slight change in their payment schedule this month.

Typically, recipients of Supplemental Security Income, known as SSI, receive their payments on the first of the month. The first of February falls on a Sunday, however, so payments will go out on Friday, Jan. 31. The same thing will happen next month when the normal date – March 1 – is on a Saturday, pushing the distribution date to Feb. 28. You can see the complete calendar of payments here.

SSI pays monthly benefits to low-income seniors, people with blindness or those with a qualifying disability. Many of the recipients also receive Social Security benefits although the two are different. SSI is paid through the general fund of the U.S. and isn’t based on prior work. Social Security benefits are paid based on taxes paid into Social Security.

Roughly 5 million Americans receive SSI with another 1.5 million getting both SSI and Social Security. As of December 2024, about 65 million Americans receive Social Security.

The maximum monthly SSI benefit for 2025 is $967 for an individual and $1,450 for a couple, compared to $943 and $1,415, respectively, in 2024. The increase resulted from a 3.2% Cost of Living Adjustment that started at the first of the year.

The increase is lower than the 3.2% beneficiaries received in 2024 but is close to the historical norm of 2.6% received in the past 20 years. During that time, COLAS have ranged from as low as 0 in 2010, 2011 and 2016 to as high as 8.7% in 2023.
