So long Fruit Stripe, Super Bubble: 2 iconic candies discontinued
So long Fruit Stripe. It’s been good Super Bubble.
The two iconic chewing gums have been discontinued and will no longer be available once existing stock is sold, CBS News reported. Maker Ferrara told CBS News it had quit making the products in 2022 amid a years-long decline in gum chewing.
“We have made the difficult decision to sunset Fruit Stripe Gum, but consumers may still be able to find product at select retailers nationwide,” Ferrara said in a statement first reported by TheTakeout.com.“ The decision to sunset this product was not taken lightly, and we considered many factors before coming to this decision, including consumer preferences, and purchasing patterns.”
Fruit Stripe was introduced in the 1960s and came in five flavors – Wet n’ Wild Melon, Cherry, Lemon, Orange, and Peach – with each stick sporting a zebra-striped pattern. Super Bubble was an even earlier treat, rolled out in 1946 as the first individually wrapped bubble gum.
News of the gum’s demise has prompted a host of third-party sales with a 17-stick pack of Fruit Stripe posted for $29 on the auction site eBay while vintage cases of Super Bubble listed for as much as $49.99.
