Snow showers possible later today in Alabama

Snow showers possible later today in Alabama

Alabama is still in line to see a little snow today, according to forecasters.

The National Weather Service will be watching an upper-level system move through the region that will bring the chance of rain, snow or a rain-snow mix to the northern part of Alabama today and into tonight.

Snow showers or flurries could be possible as soon as this afternoon, but the prime window for any white stuff will be this evening into the overnight hours.

If snow falls it is expected to only stick to elevated and grassy surfaces because the ground is still too “warm” for it to hang around there.

Forecasters said less than a quarter inch will be possible — and that’s only in isolated areas.

The weather service said light rain showers will be possible today, with temperatures in the 40s and 50s. But that rain could mix with or change over to all snow later tonight — roughly from 6 p.m. until midnight — for areas roughly from Birmingham northward, forecasters said.

The weather service on Friday expanded the areas that could possibly see snow to include more of the northern half of central Alabama.

Areas to the south of that could see a few flurries as well, the weather service said.

This may not be the only chance for snow for Alabama in the near future. The weather service will also be watching the forecast closely for Tuesday, when an area of low pressure is expected to track along the Gulf Coast and bring more precipitation to Alabama.

It’s too soon to say if it would be cold enough for snow, but it’s too soon to rule out that possibility as well.
