Snow, ice on Alabama roads stall traffic, cause wrecks: Officials urge drivers to use caution
Alabama officials are issuing advisories and preparing the roads as snow, wintry precipitation, and warnings of a winter storm continue to impact the state.
The Florence Police Department reported several vehicle crashes since snow and ice began trickling into Alabama on Sunday night.
The department is cautioning drivers to stay off roads unless travel is “absolutely necessary.”
Monday morning, in a post on Facebook, officials urged the public to drive slowly and leave plenty of space between vehicles.
The department also instructed the public to stop calling 911 to ask about road conditions to keep the line open for emergencies.
Those wishing to get in contact with the department for non-emergency assistance can call (256)760-6500.

Tips from ALDOT
In a statement on Monday, the Alabama Department of Transportation says it plans to pretreat roads to reduce the impact of ice as winter weather continues to affect the state. The agency says it will also have crews ready to address any roadway needs that may arise.
ALDOT has issued several reminders for the public. Motorists can check driving conditions for the state, U.S. and interstate highways at ALGOtraffic.com or use the ALGO traffic app for up-to-date traffic information.
Appropriate driving speeds are determined by the road conditions. On wet or icy roads, motorists should drive slower than the posted speed limit. If possible, motorists should also slow down and move over when approaching highway maintenance personnel and emergency vehicles.
