Snow falling in north Alabama, bitterly cold weather ahead: What to expect today
Parts of north and north-central Alabama started the day on Wednesday with some snow on the ground.
A winter weather advisory remains in effect for all of north Alabama and the northern parts of central Alabama, and the National Weather Service warned that the snow and mix of snow and sleet could cause some slippery spots on roads this morning.
The weather service said most areas in north Alabama will get less than an inch of snow and sleet through the morning hours.
But the storm may be overperforming in some areas.
The weather service has gotten one report of around 2 inches in the Rogersville area in Lauderdale County this morning.
And the National Weather Service in Huntsville reported about an 1.5 of snow at its office around 6:40 a.m.
Light amounts of snow have been reported, mainly in far northern Alabama, and the back edge of the snow was moving through northern Alabama as of 6 a.m.
The weather service had gotten some reports of slick roads in parts of Jackson County.
Snow has been reported as far south as Marion and Lamar counties in north-central Alabama.
The weather service in Birmingham said the Birmingham International Airport was reporting a mix of sleet and rain.
The rest of the state is expected to get only a cold rain today.
The weather service said the winter weather advisory for north Alabama will be in effect until 11 a.m. A winter weather advisory for the northern counties of central Alabama will be in effect until 9 a.m.
Most spots in Alabama will rise above freezing today, so most of the winter precipitation is expected to melt during the day.
Much colder temperatures will be the story starting later today, and cold weather advisories will go into effect for the entire state. Cold weather advisories are now issued in the place of wind chill advisories.
Temperatures tonight will plunge into the low teens overnight in north Alabama.
Central Alabama will have lows between 20 degrees and 25 degrees.
Even south Alabama will be very chilly, with lows in the 20s expected for most areas.
