Snow and ice across north Alabama create treacherous road conditions

Road conditions Tuesday morning across Alabama remain challenging as many counties are reporting icy and impassable roads.

Alabamians should be prepared for record cold temperatures today, according to forecasters.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division is relaying reports of roadway conditions within the following counties.

• Blount County – all roads icy.

• Calhoun County – Icy conditions, but no travel issues reported as of 6 a.m.

• Cherokee County –County Round 32 has reports of icy road conditions.

• Chilton County – Interstate 65 has multiple crashes between the 198 mile marker and the 226 mile marker, and is currently impassable in certain areas. EMA reports icy roads. All overpasses should be considered icy. Most major thoroughfares have been reported as having icy conditions, including U.S. 31, and Alabama 145, 191, and 155. U.S. 82 double bridges between the 106 and 107 mm are iced over.

• Colbert County – Ice and snow is present on all roads. All roadways are deemed impassable.

• Coosa County – US 280 near Co Rd 49, one mile in east and west of Alexander City trooper post is iced over.

• Cullman County – Interstate 65 has reports ice.

• DeKalb County – Alabama 68 has reports of icy road conditions.

• Etowah County – U.S. 231 near Sardis, Alabama 77 bridge, Old Bluff Road, Bruton Gap and Hazel Bend Road, Alabama 179 and Little Cove Road report icy road conditions. Additional roads affected include Sutton Bridge Road, U.S. 431 at U.S. 278 and Alabama 77, Tidmore Bend Road and South 11th Street at Gadsden City High School. All county roads and bridges have reports of icy road conditions.

• Fayette County – Ice and snow is present on roadways throughout the county. All roadways are deemed impassable. No reported crashes currently.

• Franklin County – Ice and snow is present on roadways throughout the county. All county roads are deemed impassable.

• Jackson County – Icy road conditions reported on Alabama 79, U.S. 72, Alabama 40 and bridge, Alabama 117, Alabama 17, Alabama 73 and Alabama 35. Roads and bridges are treacherous icy.

• Lamar County – Ice and snow is present on roadways throughout the county. All roadways are deemed impassable. No reported crashes currently.

• Lauderdale County – Ice and snow is present on roadways throughout the county. All county roads are deemed impassable. No reported crashes currently.

• Lawrence County – Ice and snow is present on roadways throughout the county. No reported crashes currently as of 7 a.m.

• Limestone County –U.S. 72, Interstate 65, and U.S. 31 have reports of icy road conditions. County roads and bridges are deemed impassable.

• Madison County – Alabama 53 to Jeff Road icy, as well as U.S. 231 and U.S. 72. Bankhead Parkway and Green Mountain Road are closed. Walker Lane Road has reports of icy conditions. County Roads in the northern part of the county are deemed impassable.

• Marion County – Ice and snow is present on roadways. All county roads impassable.

• Marshall County – Alabama 69, U.S. 231 and GA Mountain Road icy.

• Morgan County – U.S. 31, Interstate 65, Alabama 36 and 67 all have reports of icy conditions. Roads are icy.

• Shelby County – City of Calera reporting icy bridges and roads. If you have to travel, use caution.

• Winston County – Ice and snow is present on roadways throughout the county. All county roads are deemed impassable. No reported crashes currently.

• Walker County – Ice and snow is present on roadways throughout the county. All roadways are deemed impassable. No reported crashes currently.

ALEA is urging motorists to use caution when traveling and stay weather aware. Stay indoors if possible.
