Slaying of Hoover man in Birmingham ruled justifiable; victim may have been robber
The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office ruled the homicide of a Hoover man in Birmingham late last month was justifiable, authorities said Friday.
No charges will be filed in the shooting death of Raul Angel Cajigas Jr., who may have been in the course of committing a robbery when he was shot Feb. 26, said Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
The shooting occurred about 10 p.m. Feb. 26 in the 200 block of Third Avenue S.W. That location is the University Crossings apartments, formerly known as Montello Gardens, in the Titusville community.
Police said Shot Spotter – the city’s gunfire detection system – alerted police to gunfire. While officers were en route, dispatchers were notified that someone had been shot.
Once on the scene, police found Cajigas on the sidewalk near the road. He was rushed to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead later that night.
Shot Spotter registered two different alerts – one with two shots, and the second with three shots.
It is the fourth time since 2022 that the apartments have been the scene of a homicide investigation. The last one was during Spring Break 2023 when a teen was killed in a shootout.
